2008 Volvo C70 Review

2008 Volvo C70 Review The C70 is a convertible coupe that was introduced in 1998. Originally offered as either a coupe or a soft-top convertible, the coupe was dropped in 2003. The C70 went out of production in 2005, but returned in 2006 as a thoroughly redesigned hard-top convertible coupe. The C70 has been selected as one of the IIHS’ “Top Safety Picks” for 2008.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Volvo C70 is a return to form for Sweden’s conservative brand. Despite its looks, it doesn’t inject much driving excitement into the lineup, no matter what the marketing says. The C70 is classic Volvo through and through, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Its performance won’t wow you, but it’s easily the safest convertible you can buy. If you want a down to earth car with a sense of style, the C70 fits the bill.

What’s New For 2008:

The engine hp has been bumped from 218 to 227. New wood trim adorns the interior. Tire pressure monitoring is now standard.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the C70 3 stars for mechanical quality and 3.5 stars for design and performance. The previous generation was recalled six times for issues such as inadvertent airbag deployment and flaky headlights. Problems with the current generation include cold start issues and erroneous check engine lights. No recalls have been issued. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Government crash test scores are not available. The C70 earned perfect IIHS scores, and is one of their Top Safety Picks. Anti-lock brakes, side airbags, active head restraints, a rollover bar, and traction and stability control come standard. Unique for its class, the side airbags protect occupants even when the top is down.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

+ Unparalleled safety
+ Comfortable interior

Cons

The BMW Z4 has nearly 30 more hp and leather, but costs several thousand more. The Volkswagen Eos costs over a thousand less, includes leather seats, 20 more hp, and a moonroof.
