The Volkswagen New Beetle offers unique retro style, as well as value. Solid reliability and plenty of features come in at a fairly low MSRP. It’s reasonably fun to drive, but not quite sporty. Overall, it’s a good choice if you’re in need of something different.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Beetle 2 stars for overall mechanical quality. Problems from 1998-2005 include poor AM reception, hard starting on diesel engines, tire wear and vehicle noise. It was recalled four times. Problems since the 2006 refresh include cold starting issues, insufficient heater cores and transmission noise. It’s been recalled twice for malfunctioning brake light switches. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Beetle earned four stars in government crash tests. In IIHS test, it earned “Good” for front and rear tests, and “Poor” in side tests. Anti-lock brakes, side airbags, active head restraints, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Unique style
+ Good value
+ Full standard safety features

Cons
– Cramped back seat
– Mediocre crash test scores
– Old platform

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chrysler PT Cruiser, depending on the trim, can cost more and lacks ABS and traction control. The more conventional Honda Civic gets up to eight more miles to the gallon, but lacks traction control. The MINI Cooper costs a few hundred more, lacks traction control, has less cargo space, 30 less hp, but has better fuel economy.

What Others Are Saying:

“Volkswagen’s New Beetle is no longer that new…Out on the road, in the real world, however, the New Beetle still attracts attention…More important to people who own one, the Beetle’s driving dynamics continue to deliver a spunky driving experience to go along with its spunky-yet-timeless looks.” The New York Times

“Cute, fun and efficient, now nine model years old, the New Beetle is well equipped and a good buy, in my book. The convertible is pricier but still a bargain as convertibles go. Take a look and a test drive. But don’t expect it to resemble the old Beetle in anything but ambiance.”The Auto Channel

“So what makes the New Beetle so damned adorable? Its owners. While the New Beetle’s driving dynamics and interior accoutrements are nothing special, the car’s aggressive pricing, comprehensive unobjectionality and mid-20’s mileage allow Beetle-lovers to project their adoration onto the machine without fear of contradiction. Last year, almost forty thousand consumers drove home in a new Beetle or Beetle cabriolet. That’s not bad for a poorly-packaged German retromobile that critics dismissed as a passing fad. As empty nest Moms pass their Bug down to college-bound daughters, as used Beetles find new friends down market, the New Beetle is sure to generate warm fuzzies for years to come.”The Truth About Cars
