2007 Toyota RAV4 Review

2007 Toyota RAV4 Review The RAV4 is a small compact crossover introduced to the US in 1996. It was one of the first SUVs marketed as such. The second generation debuted in 2001, splitting the trim choices between base and an “L” model. Available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive, the second RAV4 remained virtually unchanged until 2004, when it received a slight refresh. The third generation debuted for 2006, and maintained the 2.4-L four-cylinder from the 2004 update. However, the RAV4 was made much larger, and it can now accommodate a V6.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Toyota RAV4 was one of the original compact crossover vehicles, and it still ranks among the best. It’s now much bigger than it was in the past, which can either be a plus or a minus, depending on what you’re looking for. With a strong reliability record, great all-around safety, and good gas mileage, the RAV4 is a fantastic budget family vehicle.

What’s New For 2007:

Full side-curtain airbags are now standard. The available JBL audio system features Bluetooth and steering-wheel controls. The RAV4 comes in three trim levels: Base, Sport, and Limited.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the RAV4 4 stars for overall manufacturing quality and 3 stars for overall design quality. The first RAV4 had issues with stuck CDs, brake noise, problematic cruise control, difficult shifting, and inefficient rear wipers. It was recalled three times. The second RAV4 had early issues with vehicle noise and inefficient rear wipers. It was recalled once in 2005 for inefficient air bags. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The RAV4 earned 4.5 stars in government frontal crash tests, and 5 stars in side tests. The IIHS gave the RAV4 “Good” ratings in frontal and side tests, and “Marginal” in rear tests. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard. V6 or third-row equipped models include hill assist.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Excellent safety ratings
+ Toyota reliability
+ Larger than its predecessor

Cons
– Mediocre interior
– Short interior space
– Larger than its predecessor

Head-To-Head Competition:

There’s no lack for small SUVs on the market. A Hyundai Tucson at the same price adds a six-cylinder engine and more payload capacity, but the RAV4 gets slightly higher gas mileage. The Jeep Patriot, for the same price, offers leather seats and AWD, but you’ll have to pay more for an automatic. The Kia Sportage LX offers a good mix, featuring a six-cylinder and AWD, but the RAV4 gets up to seven more miles per gallon.

What Others Are Saying:

“Indeed, the RAV4 Limited has many more desirable features and yet, I still couldn’t get over the loss of its nimble dimensions. While the test vehicle was stopped for photography a previous-generation RAV4 parked nearby and frankly, I thought the Gen2 was not only sensibly sized but better looking. I’ll grant you this, though, Toyota. The RAV4 is a better buy than the more expensive Highlander, which does the same tricks for almost $5000 more.”About.com

“If there’s a knock on the new RAV4, it’s the loss of its old exuberance. Then again, bigger and brawnier than its predecessor, the 2006 RAV4 demonstrates that, sometimes, more is more.”Automobile Magazine/

“To sum it up, the RAV4 just feels a lot more grown-up and is set up to be less of a quirky little ute and more the Camry of crossovers. The ride is settled; it’s quieter and more comfortable inside; it’s easier to get in and out; it’s still economical; it’s more carlike behind the wheel. What this means to shoppers is that the RAV4 will likely fit families that once considered it too small, and that it’s a better deal than ever…with a third-row seat. Soccer moms, are you listening?”Business Week
