2007 Saturn Sky Review

2007 Saturn Sky Review The Sky is a brand new sports car from Saturn. No, really, Saturn made a sports car, and a rather sleek and attractive one at that. This two-seat roadster is another sign of Saturn’s recent resurgence. Based on the Pontiac Solistice, it sports a unique, sexy look with a black and chrome interior.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Saturn Sky is Saturn’s most intriguing new model since the early ’90s. The first true challenger to the Miata, what the Sky lacks in refinement, it makes up for in price. The Red Line trim, in particular, offers impressive performance for under $30,000, making it a very attractive package. If Saturn can work the bugs out, the Miata will have to rev its engines to keep up.

What’s New For 2007:

The Sky features a 2.4-L, 177-hp four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The Red Line boosts the horsepower to 260, with enough gusto to go from zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Sky only 2 stars for overall design quality, but 4 stars for overall performance and design. Problems reported include non-starting engines, misaligned airbag doors, vehicle surging, electrical failures, engine misfires, water leaks, low oil pressure, and troublesome shifting. No recalls have been issued. Expect below-average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Sky earned four stars in government crash tests. IIHS ratings are unavailable. Anti-lock brakes are standard, and the Red Line comes with stability control.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Attractive design
+ Inexpensive
+ Comfortable

Cons
– Awkward interior
– Poor reliability
– Heavy

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Sky costs $2,000 less than the Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring, and has a larger engine with 14 more hp. However, the Miata includes side airbags. For less than $1,000 more, you can upgrade to a basic Ford Mustang with a 4.0-L, 210-hp V6 engine and more seating. Or you can go in the opposite direction and buy a MINI Cooper convertible for $2,000 less. While the Cooper is hip and stylish, it has a much smaller 115-hp engine. But you will get more seating, side airbags, and more than likely, better gas mileage.

What Others Are Saying:

“True to form, the Sky is rear-wheel drive, with two seats, a cloth top, a reverse-opening clamshell hood and an affordable price for a sports car.” – Forbes

“Complaints duly noted, the Sky drives well despite its weight and catches stares under blue skies. Many will find more to love in the crafty MX-5, but the Sky’s styling and standard features make it the first sunny patch in Saturn’s long winter of discontent.”Car and Driver

“Saturn, style, and sports car? With its new Sky, Saturn is showing an interesting new direction.”The Auto Channel
