2008 Saab 9-3 Review

2008 Saab 9-3 Review The 9-3 is an entry-level luxury car first released in 1999 to replace the 900. Originally only available as a hatchback, a sedan was introduced in 2003. A convertible was added in 2004. It has won several awards world-wide and is an IIHS “Top Safety Pick” for 2008.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Saab 9-3 is a unique luxury car that has a lot to like. Its excellent handling and superior safety make for a carefree driving experience. However, it hasn’t aged well, and you can buy a lot more car for the money. If you’re in the market for something off the beaten track, the 9-3 is worth a look. Otherwise, you can probably do better.

What’s New For 2008:

The exterior has been redesigned. Based on the Aero X concept car, the 9-3 now features a monochromatic trim. An AWD version debuts in January, with a more powerful 280-hp V6.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the 9-3 3.5 stars for mechanical, performance and design quality. Problems with the first 9-3 include faulty AC compressors, non-shifting transmissions, brake-fluid leaks, excessive oil consumption and loose wipers. It was recalled six times. Issues affecting the current 9-3 include failing AC compressors, cold starting problems, difficult shifting, oil leaks, steering noise and flaky windows. It has been recalled four times for stalling, possible fuel leakage, damaged seatbelts and failing brake valves. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

It earned perfect IIHS scores and is one of their “Top Safety Picks.” Anti-lock brakes, active head restraints, front side airbags, and stability and traction control are standard. The sedan and wagon feature full side airbags, while the convertible has a rollover detector with pop-up roll bars.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Unique
+ Excellent safety
+ Great handling

Cons
– Overpriced
– Aging
– Interior a bit cheap comparatively

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Volvo C70 costs a few hundred more, but has an extra cylinder and a bit more hp. The Chrysler 300 C costs a thousand less and has a powerful V8 with 130 more hp and AWD. The Toyota Avalon Limited costs a few thousand less and has a V6 with over 50 more hp, as well as a moonroof. However, it lacks standard stability control.

What Others Are Saying:

“Overall, the 9-3 has crisp handling befitting a compact sport sedan. It’s a refreshing alternative to other import sedans in a crowded market. GM has finally moved Saab into the dreaded middle ground of the entry-luxury field, though not at the expense of losing all of the brand’s quirky character.” – Forbes

“In the automotive industry, “facelift” is a term thrown about regularly to mean that a car has been mildly updated mid-cycle, both inside and out… In the Saab 9-3’s case, however, it really is literally just a facelift. The Saab has a new beak, including hood and bumpers, accentuated by updated headlights with glittery chrome surrounds. In addition, a much-loved Saab feature – the clamshell hood – also makes a comeback.”Automobile Magazine

“I got a first-hand lesson in Saab safety when a driver tried to pass on the right just as I was making a turn. The impact wasn’t severe enough to set off the 9-3’s side airbags, but it was a significant hit with the brunt of the force directed at the passenger’s door. The Saab’s body structure absorbed the impact, so while there was significant damage to the 9-3’s door and fender, there was no damage to the interior door panel, or, more importantly, my wife Robin’s leg. The other car literally bounced right off of the Saab. Would a lesser car have held up as well? I couldn’t say and I wouldn’t want to find out. I’m just very glad we were driving a Saab that day.”About.com
