2008 Mercury Mariner Review
The Mariner debuted for 2005 as a crossover SUV. Essentially a reskinned Ford Escape, the Mariner offers all the comfort and luxury you expect from a Mercury. The 2008 Mariner is all new; this is the first major change since its introduction.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Mercury Mariner is a comfortable, competent CUV. Perfect for any family, its assortment of safety features allows you to drive in confidence. However, it’s priced poorly next to the 2007 competition, and its fuel economy isn’t so great for its relatively weak engine.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
The Mariner earned 3 out of 5 stars in J.D. Power’s initial reliability survey. The new Mariner is too young for long-term information to be available. However, drivers in the past have complained of vehicle noise, failing transmissions, difficult steering, and engine stalling. The 2006 model was recalled for unlubricated wiper gears. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Mariner earned perfect 5-star government crash test ratings, except for the front driver side, which earned 3 stars. IIHS data is not yet available. Standard safety equipment includes full side airbags, tire pressure monitor, rollover sensor, and traction and stability control. Four-wheel drive is available.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Loaded with safety features
+ Comfortable interior
+ Lots of storage space
Cons
– Four-wheel drive not standard
– Poor fuel efficiency
– Weak engine
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Dodge Nitro costs the same as the Mariner, but comes with a more powerful engine and 4WD. While it offers 60 more horsepower, the Nitro does get about five miles less to the gallon. The Honda CR-V gets slightly better gas mileage and has an automatic five speed. The Jeep Patriot Limited costs $700 more, but features leather seats and 4WD, though it lacks an automatic.
What Others Are Saying:
“In testing the Escape, the Tribute, and the Mariner-which we lump together because they’re essentially identical-we give them high marks for overall competence, passenger capacity, and brisk performance. They score lower in subjective areas such as general ambiance.” – Car and Driver
“It’s like riding in a sport-ute made over by the cast of Designing Women, but even macho men will appreciate the Mariner’s upgraded seats front and back, the installation of a Personal Safety System that includes side-impact airbags and curtain airbags as well, and anti-lock brakes. All Mariners come with a CD player, air conditioning and power conveniences, making even the least expensive versions a quiet, luxuriant SUV choice.” – BusinessWeek
“I found the Mariner’s cabin to be exceptionally pleasant.” – About.com
