2007 Lexus LX 470 Review

2007 Lexus LX 470 Review The LX is a full-size luxury SUV first introduced in 1996. The second generation came soon after, in 1998, as the LX470 model. In 2006, the 470 received a 45-hp engine boost. Kelley Blue Book named the LX the “Best to Hold Value” in 1998-2000. J.D. Power named the 470 the most reliable luxury SUV in 2005. A new LX is set to debut for 2008.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Lexus LX has a substantial history. Its reliability record is excellent, and the 470’s mature design ensures that it’s solid as a rock. Unfortunately, it hasn’t aged well, and newer models from its competitors easily beat it in economy and fuel efficiency. However, Lexus rarely lets us down, and we have high hopes for the upcoming 2008 revamp.

What’s New For 2007:

The 2007 model shows few changes. A front-passenger occupant system is now standard. A new “Limited Edition” has been released with Black Onyx exterior, special trim, and wheels.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the LX 4.5 stars for overall manufacturing quality and 5 stars for overall design quality. Problems that affected the 470 in the ’90s include noisy ball joints, brake noise, hard starting, and wind noise. The 1998-2005 models were recalled due to the daytime running lights being too bright. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are not available. Full side airbags, a rollover sensor, anti-lock brakes, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Lexus reliability
+ Strong off-road capabilities
+ Plenty of luxury features

Cons
– Poor value for the money
– Terrible gas mileage
– Cramped rear seat

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Audi Q7 costs $7,500 less and has 80 more horsepower, but lacks the LX’s sunroof. The BMW X5 costs $13,000 less, has 80 more horsepower, and slightly better gas mileage, but it lacks the LX’s navigation system, DVD player, CD changer, and sunroof. The Cadillac Escalade ESV costs almost $8,000 less, has more payload capacity, and a larger engine with 135 more horsepower. However, it lacks a sunroof.

What Others Are Saying:

“Sales of the mammoth Lexus LX 470 have slipped. It gets horrible mileage, but can handle just about any terrain and is rare as SUVs go.”Forbes

“If you’re considering an LX 470, you should really consider the Toyota Land Cruiser as well for about $10,000 less. I’d have a hard time justifying the price difference, but your money may go further than mine does.”About.com

“The Lexus LX470 is not for everyone — the gas mileage is appalling, the ride relatively trucky, some of the everyday features a bit awkwardly implemented, the rear seats designed for emergency use only — but if you’re bound and determined to get a full-sized luxury truck instead of a more sensible minivan or sedan, it’s the best in its class.”4×4 Review
