2008 Lexus IS 350 Review

2008 Lexus IS 350 Review The IS is a compact luxury sports car that debuted in 2001. It was redesigned in 2006, and split into two models, the IS 250 and IS 350. The 250 is the sportier of the two, while the 350 is more of an entry-level luxury car. The IS 350 has more power, faster acceleration and more luxury features than the 250. The IS has won a number of awards around the world, including Top Gear’s “Executive Car of the Year” in 2006.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Lexus IS 350 is a reliable luxury car with a nice amount of advanced features. All around, the IS 350 is another great car from Lexus with a smooth, powerful ride. But depending on your interests, you might actually prefer its little brother, the IS 250. The 250 has AWD and a manual transmission available, whereas the 350 does not.

What’s New For 2008:

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The IS is one of only three entry premium vehicles to earn 5 stars in J.D. Power’s 2007 dependability study. Problems with the first generation included flaky compasses and noisy transmissions. No recalls were issued. Problems with the current model include miscalibrated engine computers and misfiring cylinders. It was recalled three times in 2006 for stuck pedals, weak airbag inflators and stuck seatbelts. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The IS earned 4 stars in government frontal crash tests and 4.5 stars in side tests. In IIHS tests, it received “Good” ratings for the front and side, and “Acceptable” for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard. A pre-collision system and dynamic cruise control are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Beefy engine
+ Outstanding dependability & reliability
+ Advanced features

Cons
– Cramped interior
– Somewhat disappointing safety scores
– No AWD available

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Infiniti G35 Sedan costs a couple grand less, has 80 more hp, and AWD, but lacks traction control and a moonroof. The BMW 3 Series 335i cost about $3,000 thousand more but has more headroom and overall passenger space. The Volvo C70 costs a few thousand more, but it’s a convertible. However, it has 80 less hp, front-wheel drive, and more curb weight.

What Others Are Saying:

“IS350 owners, on the other hand, don’t have to worry about getting sand kicked in their faces. Thanks to two forms of variable valve timing and two types of fuel injection, as well as chain-driven camshafts, roller rockers, and a raft of techno-gadgetry, the big V-6 generates numbers that humble not only the BMW but also the Infiniti G35, the erstwhile power champ in this class.”Automobile Magazine

“Despite its emphasis on sport, there is no shortage of luxury comfort and convenience in a new Lexus IS. It wouldn’t be a Lexus without that, after all… Conclusions: Lexus launches a major attack on Bavaria with its new IS sports sedans.”The Auto Channel

“In short, the IS 350 is a bad BMW, rather than a great Lexus. Shame. As I watched the M3 evaporate that afternoon, I wished I was driving an LS, SC or RX. I could have cranked-up the tunes, kicked back and… relaxed.”The Truth About Cars
