2007 Lexus GX 470 Review

2007 Lexus GX 470 Review The GX is a mid-size SUV that debuted in 2003. The GX is Lexus’s mid-level SUV, fitting in between the crossover Lexus RX and the fully loaded Lexus LX. The GX received a minor interior refresh for 2006. The GX was named “4 Wheeler of the Year” for 2003-04 from 4×4 Magazine, and it was rated the highest ranked luxury SUV in 2005 by J.D. Power.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Lexus GX is a capable SUV from one of the premier auto manufacturers. Although it does have off-road potential, most people who buy Lexuses don’t ever leave the pavement. While build quality is equal to Lexus’s high standards, the GX’s fuel economy is as rotten as any other SUV of this size.

What’s New For 2007:

The optional navigation system now features voice control. The audio system has an auxiliary input jack and can play DVDs. The optional rear video screen is a larger 9 inches wide.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the GX 5 stars for overall manufacturing quality and 4.5 stars in overall design quality. Problems that affected the early GXs included noisy air conditioning, loose running board clips, stuck doors, smelly exhaust systems, suspension noise, and sticky power windows. It has not been recalled. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are not available. Full-side airbags, a rollover sensor, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Off road capability
+ Good reliability record
+ Great handling

Cons
– Unknown crashworthiness
– Poor fuel economy
– Fewer features for the price than other Lexus vehicles

Head-To-Head Competition:

You can buy an Acura MDX with a DVD player, navigation system, and 40 more horsepower for $940 less, but it has a smaller, six-cylinder engine and no moonroof. The Audi Q7 costs $700 less, has a six-speed transmission, and a standard DVD player, but it too has a smaller six-cylinder and lacks a moonroof. If you don’t mind dropping $1,000 more, you can buy a GMC Yukon Denali with a larger engine, six-speed transmission, navigation, more payload capacity, and 100 more horsepower. However, it also lacks a moonroof.

What Others Are Saying:

“The GX 470 promises to be another huge moneymaker for Toyota’s Lexus division. It’s not only wondrously capable on the road (as would be expected) but it is also almost equally capable off-road. I use the qualifying ‘almost’ merely to suggest no one in their right mind would actually take a luxury vehicle like the GX 470 rock climbing.”About.com

“Overall, superbly comfortable, very well-mannered on the road, even in slippery and snowy conditions, and certainly cuts a stylish path through the well-heeled streets of Aspen, CO.”The Auto Channel

“On the pavement, the Lexus GX 470 maintains a smooth ride with crisp handling (for an SUV) by virtue of its independent front suspension and self-leveling, rear air suspension. High and low settings on the suspension allow for added off-road clearance and easier ingress and egress.”Forbes
