What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the XC90 3 stars for overall dependability. Reported issues include excessive A/C airflow, vehicle noise, rocking power seats, non-opening tailgates, and flaky climate control. It’s been recalled 4 times for loosening ball joints, short circuits, lost jack crank handles, and stuck wipers in winter. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The XC90 earned perfect NHTSA and IIHS test scores. The IIHS has chosen the XC90 as one of their “Top Safety Picks” for 2008. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, active front head restraints, a rollover sensor, and stability control. Child safety locks, adaptive headlights, and Volvo’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) are optional. BLIS warns the driver of vehicles entering the XC90’s blind spots.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Excellent performance
+ Top crash test scores
+ Comfortable

Cons
- Aging model
- Underwhelming towing capacity
- Weak engine for its class

Head-To-Head Competition:

The BMW X5 includes standard AWD, 25 more hp, and can tow more, but costs significantly more. The Infiniti FX35 includes a CD changer, leather, and has 40 more hp, but costs a couple thousand more. The Lexus RX 350 includes a CD changer, 35 more hp, can tow more, and gets slightly better gas mileage, but costs over a thousand more.

What Others Are Saying:

“As with most sport utility vehicles, storage space always is a consideration. The XC90 gives buyers plenty of room for a week of groceries with the third seat in the up position. Lowering the split rear seat allows for even more storage space and room for larger objects.”The News-Herald

“The Volvo XC90 packs a lot of space into a good-looking, manageably sized vehicle. It’s better than most competitors for hauling children around, with superior cargo and seating flexibility, and it’s loaded with Volvo’s trademark safety technology.”The New York Times

“So… You burn up a lot of fuel in an XC90 V8- especially if you’re not prone to dawdling- but the SUV doesn’t release as many ozone-killing hydrocarbons as the other guys’. Plus you’re driving one of the safest and most luxurious SUV’s on the planet, with a low-slung front bumper that lessens your chance of skewering fellow road users with your prow.”The Truth About Cars
