What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Beetle 2 stars for overall mechanical quality. Problems from 1998-2005 include poor AM reception, hard starting on diesel engines, tire wear and vehicle noise. It was recalled four times. Problems since the 2006 refresh include cold starting issues, insufficient heater cores and transmission noise. It’s been recalled twice for malfunctioning brake light switches. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Beetle earned four stars in government frontal crash tests. In IIHS test, it earned “Good” for front and rear tests, and “Poor” in side tests. Anti-lock brakes, side airbags, active head restraints, an anti-rollover system, plus stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Distinctive style
+ Cheap convertible
+ Fun to drive

Cons
- Tight back seat
- Old platform
- Disappointing crash test scores

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Mazda MX-5 MIATA Touring includes a six-speed manual and a CD changer, but costs several hundred more and lacks traction control. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS includes a standard CD changer, but costs a couple thousand dollars more and lacks traction control. The MINI Cooper Convertible costs over $1,000 less, but has over 30 less hp and lacks traction control.

What Others Are Saying:

“…the New Beetle is still a sharp performer, though clearly performance isn’t its primary goal. It just indicates that VW isn’t willing to put the money into a complete redesign. Chances are the New Beetle will soldier on in its current form for a few years to come. To which I say: ‘So what?’ The New Beetle convertible isn’t about having the latest-and-greatest in technology. It’s about sunny days and slow, meandering roads. It’s about little kids waving and total strangers smiling. It’s about kicking back and not taking life all that seriously.”About.com

“This is a fine blend of modern attributes and nostalgia, amplified by a palette of pastel color choices that bring forward one of the best parts of the old cars: their gentle, nonmetallic hues. As cheap convertibles go, this one makes a lot of sense.”Automobile Magazine

“This wins us over with the most unlikely of Beetle traits – reasonableness.”Car and Driver
