New Roadsters: Inexpensive Cool New Cars

Cool new cars combine roadster glamour and performance without the price tag. Sound too good to be true? Well, just take a look at what Pontiac, Saturn and Mazda have been cooking up.

The Pontiac Solstice was first presented as a concept car at the 2002 New York Auto Show and four years later it became a reality. With a base model priced under 20K, new car buyers have given it a proper welcome: More than 7,000 cars were sold after its appearance on NBC’s “The Apprentice”, the first 1,000 took only 41 minutes to sell. According to CNN, since its introduction, Pontiac dealerships have had 20% more visitors and can’t keep up with demand.

The Saturn Sky, has also opened new doors for GM. Conceived by the creator of the PT Cruiser and Pontiac Solstice, the convertible Sky adds a European touch to a dynamic design. Although it shares the Solstice’s drive train and chassis, it has a personality and force of its own. Priced at $23,690 expectations are high for the 2007 model.

The Mazda MX5, formerly known as the Miata, is the oldest of the bunch. Originally introduced in 1989, it has been described as a “modern incarnation of a British sports car“. Although considerably smaller than its competitors, the Mazda MX5 is designed for the same demographic and target market. Besides the new name, the 2006 MX5 is also slightly modified to include improved weight-saving technologies and materials that increase crash worthiness. The new version is a little larger, more muscular and faster than its predecessors.

Priced at $22,935, the Miata is Mazda’s lucky charm, is responsible for the company’s 5% sales increase in April, 2006, according to Business Week.
