2008 Dodge Caliber Review
The Caliber is an entry-level hatchback that replaced the Neon for 2007. An alternative to gas-guzzling SUVs, the Caliber combines utility with efficiency. But can the Caliber hold up in this fast-growing segment?

The Dodge Caliber has more room than just about any other vehicle in its class. Unfortunately, it lags behind in features and performance. Fortunately, the new SRT4 improves things in both departments, but of course you’ll pay more. There are a couple of unique features like a cold beverage holder and tailgate-ready speakers. But overall, you have a number of alternatives to the Caliber, and most of them do the job better.

What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power gives the Caliber 3 stars for overall mechanical quality, 2.5 stars for design quality, and 2 stars for performance and design. The Caliber has been recalled twice for brake lockup and failing parking brakes. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Caliber earned 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Good” for the front and “Marginal” for the side and rear. Anti-lock brakes come standard on the R/T and SXT, but are otherwise optional. Full head side airbags and a driver-knee airbag come standard. Stability control is included with the SRT4, but otherwise optional.

Head-To-Head Competition:
The Chevrolet Aveo5 costs a couple thousand less and includes standard air conditioning, but lacks a CD player and has about 50 less hp. The Nissan Versa, for several hundred more, has AC, a CD changer, power accessories, and better mileage, but has nearly 30 less hp. The Scion xD has ABS, AC, power accessories and better mileage, for only a few hundred more.
