2007 Lexus RX Review

The RX is a crossover SUV that first debuted in 1999. It was an instant success, becoming one of Lexus’ most popular models. The second generation debuted for 2004, offering a number of improvements. The hybrid 440h debuted for 2006, based on Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. The RX has won numerous awards, including J.D. Power’s “Most Appealing SUV” and MotorTrend’s “SUV of the Year.”

What’s New For 2007:

The RX 350 debuts for 2007. A mid-cycle refresh, the 350 upgrades the engine to 270 hp that also garners improved fuel economy. An acoustic glass windshield has been added for additional sound dampening, along with other sound insulation improvements. The audio system has been upgraded for MP3 compatibility.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The RX earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in J.D. Power’s initial reliability survey. Problems have been few and far between. The first generation had issues with vehicle noise. It was recalled twice. The current generation had early issues with vacuum leaks, engine stalling, poor AC performance, and problematic power windows. The 330 was recalled once in 2004 for broken light switches. The 2006 400h was recalled for loose retaining clips. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Government crash tests are not available. The RX earned a “Good” rating from the IIHS for frontal tests, and “Poor” in rear tests. Side, front, head, and driver’s knee airbags come standard, along with stability and traction control.

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Audi Q7 costs $2,500 more, but offers standard AWD, six-speed transmission, and a DVD player. However, it lacks the RX’s CD changer and has less payload capacity. The BMW X3 has standard AWD and sunroof, but costs $600 more and lacks a standard automatic, CD changer, and has less payload capacity. The Cadillac SRX, for about the same price, offers leather seats and over twice the payload capacity, but lacks the RX’s standard CD changer.
