2008 Suzuki Forenza Wagon Review
The Forenza is a sedan/wagon that replaced the Esteem in 2004. The sedan appeared in 2004, but the wagon wasn’t introduced until 2005. In 2006, the optional leather upholstery was dropped, and the trims were renamed. No changes have been made since.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Suzuki Forenza Wagon was a fiercely competitive beast when it debuted, combining practicality and sportiness in one affordable package. However, there are better options available now, such as the Scion xB, which for only a few hundred more gives you more safety features and power, without sacrificing gas mileage, and with better reliability. Still, if you don’t appreciate the xB’s unique style, the Forenza is a suitable alternative.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power gives the Forenza 2 stars for dependability. Problems include brake noise, cold start issues, damaged insulation, and harsh shifting. It has been recalled twice for a malfunctioning brake light switch and non-latching seat belts. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Forenza earned 4 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned ‘Acceptable’ for the front and ‘Poor’ for the side and rear. Front side airbags are standard. Anti-lock brakes are optional.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Stylish
+ Affordable
+ Quiet
Cons
- Below average fuel economy
- Mediocre crash test scores
- Relatively small cargo area
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Chevrolet Aveo5 costs several thousand less and gets 5-7 more miles to the gallon, but lacks a CD player, power accessories, and has 24 less hp. The Kia Rio5 costs over a thousand less, and gets up to 8 more miles to the gallon, but lacks power accessories. The Scion xB includes anti-lock brakes, traction control, and has 30 more hp, but costs several hundred more.
What Others Are Saying:
‘Looking for an ideal, economical, reasonably priced commuter car? Then take a close look at the Suzuki Forenza, which is sold mainly on the basis of price and value… While practical, the Forenza has enough flair to avoid having a dull ‘practical car” image.’ – Chicago Sun-Times
‘Its a cliché, but the Forenza Wagon driving experience is noticeable only through the rearview mirror. There’s no cargo area boom that many wagons have. Wind noise is also subdued for a vehicle in this price range. Even 80 mph produced no whistle or roar from the standard roof rack.’ – Business Week
‘As a car, the Forenza is just OK, but as a wagon it’s wonderful. The cargo area isn’t quite as generous as wagons like the Ford Focus and VW Jetta, but it offers more room than the new generation of ’sport wagons’ such as the Toyota Matrix — and besides, it clobbers ‘em all on price.’ – About.com
