2008 Scion tC Review

2008 Scion tC Review The tC is a sports coupe that was first released in 2005, as a spiritual successor to the Toyota Celica and as part of Toyota’s more youth-geared Scion models. It’s the most conventional looking car in Scion’s lineup and is one of the most affordable sports coupes on the market. It was voted J.D. Power’s “Highest Ranked Sporty Car in Initial Quality” in 2005.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Scion tC is more than just a worthwhile successor of the Celica: It’s one of the best values in its category. With its strong performance, outstanding quality and low price; it easily bests others in this segment. While not everyone can appreciate the styling on Scion’s other models, the tC manages to be both sleek and conventional. There’s little reason not to buy it.

What’s New For 2008:

The biggest change for the 2008 tC is its refreshed exterior styling. The seat fabric has been improved, and the instrument panel has been updated. An audio input is now standard.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The tC earned 4.5 stars in government frontal crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. IIHS scores are not available. Anti-lock brakes, front and side airbags and a driver’s knee airbag come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Strong performer
+ Great value for the money
+ Stylish design

Cons
- Some blind spots
- No stability control
- Rear a bit cramped

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Hyundai Tiburon GS costs about the same but has about 23 less hp and lacks a moonroof. The MINI Cooper costs slightly more, and has a smaller engine with 40 less hp, but does weigh 500 pounds less resulting in better fuel economy. The Mitsubishi Eclipse GS costs over $2,000 more, has equivalent hp, but weighs more and lacks a moonroof.

What Others Are Saying:

“One of the best values we’ve seen, the 2006 Scion tC offers strong audio options and decent performance, but leg- and headroom are limited for taller people.”C|Net

“What Target is to discount shopping, the Scion tC is to entry-level coupes: sleek design, loads of features and a level of quality unexpected for the price.”Forbes

“If the $10,000 Corolla GT-S were touring today, it would cost about $18,000. Seeing that the tC undercuts that by about $1500, and offers modern-day quickness, safety, and refinement, think of it as ‘not shabby at all.’”Car and Driver
