2008 Saab 9-7X Review
The 9-7X is a midsize luxury SUV that debuted in 2005. It’s based on the same platform as the Trailblazer. The 9-7X will most likely be discontinued after this year.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Saab 9-7X at it’s core is little more than a warmed-over Chevrolet. Of course, it’s packed with lots of nice features and a comfortable interior, but it’s quality, safety, and handling are underwhelming in its class. Hopefully the next generation will prove more fruitful for Saab.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power ratings are not available. Problems with the 9-7X include engine stalling, oil leaks, sagging suspensions, noisy transmissions, failing OnStar, damaged wires, and delayed windshield washers. No recalls have been issued. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles and drivers can expect average reliability.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The 9-7X received 4.5 stars in government frontal crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. In IIHS tests, it only garnered an “Acceptable” for the front, “Marginal” for the side, and “Poor” for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and stability control come standard.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Quiet
+ Nice interior
+ Lots of standard features
Cons
- Sub-par crash test scores
- Too similar to the Trailblazer
- Overpriced
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Chrysler Pacifica Limited costs several thousand less and includes a DVD player, but lacks a moonroof, and has 30 less hp. The GMC Yukon has a bigger engine with 35 more hp and more towing capacity, but lacks a CD changer, navigation, leather, and a moonroof. The Honda Pilot EX-L costs several thousand less, but has 40 less hp.
What Others Are Saying:
“Still, as I said before, the 9-7X Aero is a very nice SUV. However, I can’t understand why anybody would buy one. A Chevy TrailBlazer with all-wheel drive and the 6.0-liter engine is almost $12,000 less expensive than the Saab. And considering that Chevy dealers must outnumber Saab dealers by about 10-to-1, it’ll probably be a lot easier to find service for the Chevy. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, why not just buy the real duck in the first place?” – The Dallas Morning News
“Saab owners should feel at home in the quiet, roomy, aircraft-oriented wood-and-leather interior. It’s got a Saab-designed instrument panel with controls angled toward the driver and Saab design elements, including a center console ignition switch and air vents with a sliding-plate design. However, the vertical cupholder that folds out from the dashboard and accompanies the conventional console cupholder has an awkward design.” – Chicago Sun-Times
“This is a Saab as a Saab should be and I hope that General Motors continues to pump this kind of quality, fit, and finish into the next generation, as well.” – The Boston Globe
