2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Review

The Lancer is a compact car that first debuted in 1973. Sold under a number of Chrysler nameplates in the United States, the Lancer quickly gained a reputation for its racing performance. In 2003, the performance-centered Lancer Evolution debuted. A special Ralliart edition was produced for 2004.

The new Mitsubishi Lancer is a competent, attractive compact car with a lot of value for the money. Unfortunately, it isn’t living up to its racing heritage as of yet, with only one small engine available. It also lags behind Honda in safety features. However, it looks great, has a tight ride, and features a great warranty. Mitsubishi’s on the right track here, but it’s up to them to sweeten the deal.

What’s New For 2008:

The Lancer is completely redesigned for 2008. Based on an all-new platform which it shares with the Mitsubishi Outlander, the new Lancer is wider, but shorter. The suspension is stiffer, allowing for sportier handling. It’s powered by a new 2.0-L 152-hp four-cylinder paired with a five-speed manual. A continuously variable transmission is available for the first time.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power information is not available. Problems with the last generation include car rattling and water leaks. It had one major recall in 2005 for an improperly made coolant hose that allowed leaks. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Lancer earned an average of 4.5 stars in government crash tests. During tests, the side rear door flung open. The IIHS gave the Lancer “Good” scores for frontal and rear impacts. A full array of air bags and a tire-pressure monitor come standard. Anti-lock brakes are optional on the DE but standard otherwise. The DE only has rear drum brakes while the ES and GTS come with full disc brakes.

Head-To-Head Competition:

Another inexpensive sporty car is the Mazda MAZDA3. However, it costs $3,000 more and lacks side airbags, though it does include ABS and AC. The Kia Optima includes air conditioning and gets up to 5 more miles to the gallon, but costs over $2,000 more. The Hyundai Sonata, at $3,000 more offers ABS, traction control, AC and gets about five more miles to the gallon.
