2008 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Review
The CL-Class is a limited-edition luxury coupe that is based on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Featuring the most bleeding edge technology, the CL is the pinnacle of luxury and technology. The current generation debuted for 2007.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class, like its cousin the S-Class, is Mercedes’ flagship. While the S is the more conservative choice, the CL is the edgier model, with its cat-like coupe styling. It’s been significantly improved since its last iteration, making for a fun, powerful driving experience.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
Reliability information isn’t available, but it should be similar to the S-Class. J.D. Power gives the S-Class 5 stars for overall mechanical reliability. The 1992-1999 S-Class had issues with EGR valves, vibrations, and steering problems. It was recalled three times. The last generation had issues with air conditioners, brake wear, rough idling, water leaks, and overheating windshield washer hoses. It was recalled eight times. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
Crash test scores are not available. Brake assist, eight airbags, night vision, and stability control come standard. Also included is Mercedes’ PreSafe, which can detect an oncoming collision and adjust the interior in order to protect passengers.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Breathtaking performance
+ Comfortable interior
+ Cutting edge features
Cons
- Heavy
- Pricey for its class
- Uncertain crashworthiness
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Audi R8 includes AWD and has 38 more hp, but costs nearly $6,000 more. Also, it misses out on navigation, CD changer, DVD player, and a moonroof. The 2007 BMW M6 costs $4,000 less and includes a V10 with 118 more hp, but lacks a DVD player and moonroof. The Jaguar XK R costs over $17,000 less and has nearly 40 more hp, but lacks a DVD player and moonroof.
What Others Are Saying:
“Mercedes’ CL-Class continues to meld comfort and performance in a sophisticated package.” – Forbes
“We criticized the previous CL55 AMG–the car the CL63 replaces–for driver inputs that never felt right. Although it was fast, the 55′s steering loaded up mid-corner, the brake pedal felt wooden, and the Active Body Control suspension felt unnatural in its attempt to quell body roll. It was as if the car’s computers wanted to prove they could drive better than you could. Those issues have been exorcized, replaced by quick, communicative steering, solid-feeling, easy-to-modulate brakes, and computer-managed cornering that doesn’t fight you.” – Motor Trend
“The stance of the CL resembles a leaping feline, with a tapered back and a sensual assortment of curved lines and angular design features. The Mercedes badge is integrated in the chromed grille, just like with the CLS model. The overall design of the Mercedes-Benz CL expresses more elegance and style than aggression and brute power.” – CarTitans.com
