2008 Hyundai Sonata Review
The Sonata is a midsize car that first debuted in 1989. The exterior was updated for 1995, which lead to a huge growth in sales. The second generation debuted in 1999, and the third in 2002. The fourth and current generation debuted in 2006, the first to be (partially) manufactured in the United States.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
Once again, the little Korean automaker that could comes out swinging with the Hyundai Sonata. Offering a full array of standard features for less than any of its competitors, the Sonata is the best bargain in this category. Neither the Altima, Camry or Accord can compete with the Sonata in terms of pure value.

J.D. Power information is not available. Problems with the second generation include faulty transmissions, troublesome refueling, hard starting and CD player freezes. It was recalled twice. The last generation had issues with engine noise, faulty climate control and transmission issues. It was recalled six times for issues including overly sensitive airbag sensors, fuel spillage and spare tire problems. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Sonata earned 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned "Good" scores for front and rear tests, and "Acceptable" in side tests. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, active head restraints, and stability and traction control come standard.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Great value
+ Full array of safety features
+ Lengthy warranty
Cons
- Mediocre handling
- Somewhat cramped seating
- Lacks some of Toyota/Honda's refinement
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Nissan Altima costs about $600 more, but has over ten more hp. However, it lacks standard stability and traction control. The Toyota Camry costs nearly $1,000 more, has four less hp and lacks stability/traction control. The Honda Accord costs over $2,500 more, has 15 more hp, but otherwise matches the Sonata in features.
