2008 Honda CR-V Review

2008 Honda CR-V Review The CR-V is a compact crossover SUV that first debuted in 1997. It was an instant hit, and is now the best-selling SUV in the United States. The second generation debuted in 2002, and was refreshed in 2005. It was last redesigned in 2007. The CR-V has won numerous awards and is a favorite of the automotive press.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

It’s no wonder the Honda CR-V sells so well. Excellent safety and fuel efficiency are wrapped into a well-built, attractive package that can satisfy just about any family’s needs. While some may not be fully impressed with its interior features at the lower trim levels, the leather-clad EX-L feels downright luxurious. You can get more for your money, but Honda’s fit and finish really make the CR-V special.

What’s New For 2008:

Several new features have been added to the EX-L, including a power driver seat with lumbar support, dual-zone climate control and a premium audio system. Three trims are available: LX, EX, and EX-L.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the CR-V 5 stars for mechanical quality, 4.5 stars for design quality, and 3.5 stars for performance and design. The first generation CR-V had issues with failing brake sensors, cracking foglights, and wind noise from the power mirrors. It was recalled once. The last CR-V had issues with brake noise, engine stalling, seat problems and drifting steering. It was recalled eight times for faulty seatbelt pretensioners, faulty nuts, corrosion, incorrectly wired airbags and other issues. Expect average to above-average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The CR-V earned perfect government and IIHS crash test scores. It is one of the IIHS’ 2008 “Top Safety Picks.” Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and traction and stability control come standard. A parking camera is included on EX-L’s with navigation.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Comfortable interior
+ Superior safety
+ Excellent build quality

Cons
- A bit pricey
- Non-leather models can feel a bit cheap inside
- Hills can be problematic

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Toyota RAV4 costs a few hundred less and is virtually identical in terms of features. The Hyundai Santa Fe is also a few hundred cheaper, but has a V6 with 20 more hp. The Jeep Compass costs a few thousand less, and is also very similar as far as power and features.

What Others Are Saying:

“The whole CR-V feels solid, dependable and well-constructed. The Honda CR-V is an excellent vehicle and a great value — possibly the best compact SUV on the market today. It’s always a big risk redesigning a successful model. Honda is a conservative car company, and yet they seem to be willing to rethink their vehicles every few years to adapt to changing tastes and technologies. CR-V has taken a huge leap with this new generation, and I am very impressed with the results.”About.com

“Honda has taken the positive attributes that make the CR-V its perennial best-seller and added style, better handling, and a hint of cool.”Motor Trend

“The CR-V has always been one of the premier car-based compact SUVs. The 2007 redesign maintains that tradition.”The Auto Channel
