2008 Ford Expedition Review

2008 Ford Expedition Review The Expedition is a full-size SUV introduced in 1997. It was redesigned in 2003 and again in 2007. A Limited luxury trim was added in 2004. One million Expeditions have been sold since 2004.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Ford Expedition is part of a dying breed. Full-size SUV sales have dropped significantly in the past few years, thanks to high gas prices. But for some, there simply is no substitute. If that describes you, then you could do a lot worse than the Expedition.

What’s New For 2008:

Keypad entry, heater mirrors, and a roof- mounted console are now standard. A King Ranch trim has been introduced with special wheels, trim, and leather. A backup camera is now optional.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Expedition 3 stars for overall mechanical quality, 2.5 stars for overall design, and 3.5 stars for overall performance and design. The first generation had issues with leaky transmissions, improperly sealed ducts, engine misfires, heater core leaks, cold-start issues, and quick-wearing leather. It was recalled 16 times. The second generation had issues with failing AC, chattering wheels, water accumulation in the headlights, and vehicle shaking. It was recalled twice in 2006 for improperly greased windshield wiper motors and damaged tires. Expect below average to average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Expedition earned perfect government frontal crash test scores. No other data is available. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, full side airbags, a rollover sensor, and stability and traction control are standard. Adjustable pedals and parking sensors are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Big engines
+ Spacious interior
+ Full safety features

Cons
- Poor reliability history
- Unclear safety picture
- Mediocre fuel economy

Head-To-Head Competition:

You can buy a Chevrolet Trailblazer LT2 with leather seats for the same price as the base Expedition, but it only has a V6 and lacks traction control. The Honda Pilot EX includes a standard CD changer, but only has a V6 with 60 less hp. The Hyundai Veracruz SE includes a standard third row and five more miles to the gallon, for $1,200 less. But it has a V6 with 40 less hp.

What Others Are Saying:

“If you are planning on a cross-country expedition of your own and need a large vehicle that has room for lots of people and their stuff, as well as heavyweight towing capacity and good off-road ability, the new 2007 Ford Expedition and Expedition EL are hard to beat.”The Family Car

“Choose the Ford Expedition EL if you need to transport more than five passengers in comfort. Shorter drivers will appreciate optional adjustable brake/accelerator pedals and taller ones will find the driver’s seat’s added rearward travel more accommodating.”Forbes

“If you can get over the bad timing, the new Expedition looks really nice. The Edge-style face works well, the interior is among the best in class, and safety and convenience specs leave nothing to be desired.”Automobile Magazine
