2007 Dodge Sprinter Wagon Review

2007 Dodge Sprinter Wagon Review Dodge introduced the Sprinter van in 2004. Based off the European Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, it's quickly grown in popularity. Available with a unique high roof, the Sprinter combines fuel efficiency with cargo space. A brand-new Sprinter debuts for 2007.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Dodge Sprinter combines Mercedes' build quality with an expansive interior that you can actually walk around in. In terms of space and fuel efficiency, nothing else on the market beats it. However, it suffers from a high price tag and weaker engine power.

What's New For 2007:

The Sprinter is all-new for 2007. The wheelbase has been enlarged, and the interior has been redesigned with larger windows. A 3.0-L, 154-hp V6 turbodiesel is now available.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power information is not available. The previous model featured a serious flaw that caused seam failure in the Turbo Resonator. The computer would interpret a pressure shift caused by the seam as an engine failure and suddenly limit the Sprinter's speed to about 30 mph. It's unknown whether this problem affects the current generation. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are not available. Anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control come standard. Side airbags, parking sensors, and a parking camera are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Enormous cargo space
+ Good fuel efficiency
+ Surprisingly tight handling

Cons
- Relatively expensive
- Weak engine
- Reliability concerns

Head-To-Head Competition:

The 2008 Chevrolet Express Passenger Van LT 3500 costs over $3,000 less, includes side airbags, more payload capacity, and has a V8 engine with 169 more hp. However, it lacks the Sprinter's CD player. The GMC Savana Passenger Van is about equivalent to the Express. The 2008 Ford E-Series Wagon E-350 costs nearly $800 less, and has a larger V8 with 100 more hp. However, it has less cargo capacity.

What Others Are Saying:

"Despite the Sprinter's ample dimensions, it does not feel bulky while driving. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is weighted nicely and provides just the right amount of feedback from the road. The turning radius is surprisingly tight, as one would expect from a European-designed vehicle. Parking is no more difficult than docking a full-size pickup or SUV." - The Auto Channel

"With a flat cargo floor and vertical side walls, the Sprinter is a box on wheels. It comes in two versions, cargo and passenger (a cab/chassis is also available for customizers), and seats from 2 to 10 depending on the version. A more useful, practical big van doesn't exist." - Car and Driver

"Compared to traditional large vans, Sprinter's high seating and copious lean in corners results in a tippy attitude that takes some getting used to. On straight roads Sprinter feels smaller than it is, with usefully direct steering and good highway stability. Sprinter's surprisingly tight turning circle is a boon to tight quarter maneuvering." - Consumer Guide
