2008 Dodge Dakota Review
The Dakota is a compact truck that debuted in 1987. Larger than most of its contemporaries, it's larger than say, a Ranger, but smaller than a Silverado. Also unlike others in its class, it's typically available with a V8 engine. It received a re-design this year. It was nominated for "North American Truck of the Year" in 2000.

What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power gives the Dakota 3 stars for overall quality. The previous generation had issues with rough idling, vehicle noise, water leaks, chipping paint, engine misfires, and stiff shifting. It was recalled 16 times. In the past three years, the model has had issues with difficult backing up, transmission leaks, failing remote starters and engine noise. It's been recalled five times for improper airbag deployment, transmission issues, electrical damage, brake lockup and wheel lockup. Expect below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Dakota earned 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned "Acceptable" for the front and rear. Rear anti-lock brakes are standard. Full ABS and side airbags are optional.

Head-To-Head Competition:
The Chevrolet Colorado includes power accessories, a standard automatic and gets slightly better highway mileage. However, it has a smaller four-cylinder engine, 25 less hp and can't carry as much. A similarly equipped Ford Ranger has power accessories and an automatic, but is hindered with a smaller engine with 60 less hp. The Nissan Frontier has power locks and windows plus 50 more hp for about the same price.
