2008 Dodge Caliber Review

2008 Dodge Caliber Review The Caliber is an entry-level hatchback that replaced the Neon for 2007. An alternative to gas-guzzling SUVs, the Caliber combines utility with efficiency. But can the Caliber hold up in this fast-growing segment?

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Dodge Caliber has more room than just about any other vehicle in its class. Unfortunately, it lags behind in features and performance. Fortunately, the new SRT4 improves things in both departments, but of course you’ll pay more. There are a couple of unique features like a cold beverage holder and tailgate-ready speakers. But overall, you have a number of alternatives to the Caliber, and most of them do the job better.

What’s New For 2008:

The Caliber SRT4 debuts this year, with a turbocharged 285-hp engine. The engine and transmission have been improved for better driving and less noise. All models now feature interior chrome accents. The SXT gets improved interior fabric and air filtration. The R/T includes a number of audio upgrades.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Caliber 3 stars for overall mechanical quality, 2.5 stars for design quality, and 2 stars for performance and design. The Caliber has been recalled twice for brake lockup and failing parking brakes. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Caliber earned 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Good” for the front and “Marginal” for the side and rear. Anti-lock brakes come standard on the R/T and SXT, but are otherwise optional. Full head side airbags and a driver-knee airbag come standard. Stability control is included with the SRT4, but otherwise optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Roomy
+ Powerful SRT4
+ Nifty tailgate speakers

Cons
- Sloppy handling
- Mediocre performance on most trims
- Skimps on safety features

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chevrolet Aveo5 costs a couple thousand less and includes standard air conditioning, but lacks a CD player and has about 50 less hp. The Nissan Versa, for several hundred more, has AC, a CD changer, power accessories, and better mileage, but has nearly 30 less hp. The Scion xD has ABS, AC, power accessories and better mileage, for only a few hundred more.

What Others Are Saying:

“My yardstick at the end of each drive is: would I be happy being in this car everyday? I’m leaning toward yes, as long as I had a Charger or a new Challenger (not in production) in the garage so I could thump on the throttle to create some g-force.”About.com

“Taken as a whole (as required), the Caliber does nothing particularly well- unless the ability to schlep chilly drinks takes top priority. If DCX’ ultimate goal was to convince our NATO allies that downsized Yank tanks can be fun and refined, they’ve failed on both fronts.”The Truth About Cars

“Taking the Neon’s place as the lowest-priced Dodge, the Caliber is longer, wider, and heavier than most of its competitors, including the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa, and offers a spacious back seat and trunk. The handling and ride don’t win it any prizes, however.”Car and Driver
