2008 Dodge Avenger Review

2008 Dodge Avenger Review After a seven-year hiatus, the Avenger is back on the road. However, it has little in common with its predecessor, other than its name. While the original Avenger was based on the Mitsubishi Galant, the new Avenger is a mechanical copy of the Chrysler Sebring. The aggressive styling of the Dodge Charger has been mated to the milder Avenger, which is lined up as a replacement for the Stratus.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Dodge Avenger is a worthwhile successor to the Stratus. While the new model won’t win any races, it has many more performance options than its predecessor. With a cool Charger-like exterior and neat features like a thermal cupholder, the Avenger is worth a look if you like the power and performance of the Sebring.

What’s New For 2008:

The Avenger is all new for 2008. It’s powered by a 2.4-L, 173-hp four cylinder paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. An ethanol-compatible 2.4-L, 189-hp V6 and a 3.5-L, 235-hp V6 are optional.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power data is not yet available. No technical service bulletins have been issued. It has been recalled once due to insecure door latches. The new Avenger is mechanically identical to the Chrysler Sebring, which the BuyingAdvice team determined to have below average reliability. The basic reliability lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are unavailable. Full side airbags and tire-pressure monitoring are standard. Anti-lock brakes are optional on the SE, but standard across the rest of the line. Stability control is available on all but the SE.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Looks like a Charger
+ Available AWD
+ Smooth handling

Cons
- Disappointing performance
- Skimps on safety features
- Cheap interior

Head-To-Head Competition:

The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS costs $600 less, has standard ABS and slightly better gas mileage, but lacks the Avenger’s automatic transmission and side airbags. The 2007 Honda Accord gets slightly better gas mileage and adds anti-lock brakes, but you’ll have to pay more for an automatic. You might want to just go for the mechanically identical Chrysler Sebring, which has a similar price and features, but adds anti-lock brakes.

What Others Are Saying:

“While consumers don’t need a mid-size sedan to handle the likes of Lex Luther every day, the Avenger will certainly hold its own against those daily Jokers we all come across on the road.” – The Detroit News

“This new Avenger won’t be rewriting any rules for the mid-size class. At best, it’s an alternative with a uniquely American accent.”Automobile Magazine

“Avenger will compete in a tough market segment, going up against leaders like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as the newly-improved Malibu. It will be a tough fight. The new sedan may slip in a few categories, but it definitely stands out on the design front. And for many potential buyers, we think that will more than overcome its shortfalls.”The Car Connection
