2008 Chrysler Pacifica Review
The Pacifica is a midisize CUV that debuted in 2004. It was updated in 2007 with a more powerful engine and a redesigned interior. It offers a standard third row and all-wheel drive options. It is reported that Chrysler plans to cancel production of this model soon.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Chrysler Pacifica offers a true alternative to SUVs and minivans. It strips down some of the bulk, but not at the cost of bold styling. But while it is unique and versatile, it’s weighed down by Chrysler’s typically spotty reliability; though there is a new long powertrain warranty. You’ll likely be better served by competitor crossover models, but none match the Pacifica’s uniqueness.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power gives the Pacifica 2 stars for overall quality. Problems include engine noise, faulty remote starters, failing switches and steering play. It’s been recalled four times for stalling engines, fuel leaks and flaky headlights. Expect below average to average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The Pacifica received 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Good” for the front and “Poor” for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, full side airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and stability control come standard.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Svelte design
+ Agile
+ Solid safety
Cons
- Shaky reliability record
- Not really enough space for all three rows
- Debatable value
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Chevrolet Equinox LT2 costs about the same, but lacks side airbags. The Hyundai Santa Fe has standard AWD and 40 more hp, but costs over a thousand more. You can purchase a Mercury Mariner Premier with leather and a CD changer for several hundred less.
What Others Are Saying:
“The Pacifica is more muscular looking than most wagons on the market and more svelte than most SUVs.” – U.S.News & World Report
“We were also disappointed to find our Windsor-built Pacifica had a few loose trim pieces, some bad interior trim fits and exposed screw heads in the cabin, something you wouldn’t expect in a $33,000 vehicle that veers into luxury territory.” – The Detroit News
“The Chrysler Pacifica is an excellent all-purpose vehicle. It can fill just about any roll, but it’s good looking and doesn’t scream Soccer Squirts On Board! It accelerates quickly and corners reasonably well, which makes it pleasant to drive.” – The New York Times
