What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the M 2.5 stars for overall mechanical reliability, 2 stars for overall design quality, and 4.5 stars for overall performance and design. Problems that affected the early Z4 include bad oil sensors, engine knock, and oil leaks. It was recalled once in 2003 for airbag deployment failure and the 2003-04 Z4 was recalled due to vapor lock. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

In government crash tests, the Z4 earned 4 stars in frontal tests and 3 stars in front seat side tests. IIHS ratings are not available. Anti-lock brakes, a disc dryer, tire-pressure monitoring, side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Fun to drive
+ Competitive pricing
+ Sharp handling

Cons
- Mediocre gas mileage
- Cramped interior
- Automatic transmission not available

Head-To-Head Competition:

The 2008 Audi S4 convertible has a larger V8, AWD, and a CD changer, but costs over $6,000 more, and gets five fewer miles to the gallon. The Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class 550 convertible has a V8 with 50 more hp, but costs almost $13,000 more and lacks side airbags. The M costs almost $9,000 less than the Porsche Cayman S and has over 30 more hp. However, it also gets about four fewer miles to the gallon.

What Others Are Saying:

"What it all adds up to is a jaunty little roadster with the instincts and reflexes of a cheetah. Turn-in is instantaneous and precise. Body roll is minimal, and transient response seems even more eager than the M3's, even though the M3 coupe is far from reluctant in this game." - Car and Driver

"As with most small roadsters, interior space is at a premium, and it takes some dexterity to climb in and out with the top up, thanks to the low roofline. If you're 5 foot 9 or taller, you're almost guaranteed to bump your head on the way in." - Forbes

"If the Z4 M roadster were the only car we drove on this magnificent road, we'd walk away perfectly happy-thrilled, even-with its performance. But then we trade the BMW for the Porsche, and the Boxster demonstrates once again that it is the more natural performer." - Automobile Magazine
