2008 Volvo S60 Review

2008 Volvo S60 Review Introduced in 2000, the S60 is an entry-level luxury sedan and one of the first Volvos to take on a more curvaceous appearance. In 2007, it was updated with additional safety equipment. There were also several external additions, such as a front grill and mirrors, which led to a more streamlined appearance. Drivers have three options: the 2.5T with either FWD or AWD, or the T5 for a little more get-up-and-go.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Volvo S60 is a long-standing luxury model, yet it seems to lag behind the ever-evolving competition. Although the S60 has received overall favorable safety ratings, there are other vehicles that score higher in crash tests. The tight conditions in the rear of the car disappoint those searching for a roomy, family-friendly sedan. Consumers might consider exploring alternatives in the same price bracket.

What’s New For 2008:

The R trim is no longer available and option packages have been slimmed down. Standard features now include auxiliary audio output and MP3 capability, as well as satellite radio prep.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

The S60 received 3 stars from J.D. Power for dependability. Issues with the S60 include vibrating clutch pedals, vehicle noise, oil leaks, and short alternator life. It’s been recalled six times for issues including overheating, dirty throttles, and faulty sensors. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles and consumers can expect average reliability.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The S60 received 4 stars in government frontal crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Good” scores for the front and rear, and “Acceptable” for the side. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, floating seats, active head restraints, and stability control are standard. Parking assist is available.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Moderately priced
+ Multiple safety features
+ Comfortable

Cons
- Outdated design
- Mediocre safety scores
- Cramped back seat

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Acura TL costs a couple thousand more, but adds leather seats, a CD changer, a moonroof, and 50 more hp. The Saab 9-3 costs a few thousand less and includes leather seats, but lacks an automatic transmission. The Lincoln MKZ includes AWD, a CD changer, leather seats, and 50 more hp, but costs a bit more.

What Others Are Saying:

“The S60 AWD’s quiet interior thus has easily read gauges, and big controls are placed within easy reach. There are plenty of sturdy cupholders, but inside door handles and map pockets should be larger. The big rear armrest has a storage compartment, but back windows don’t roll down all the way. All-wheel drive makes the S60 more appealing–and promises to attract new customers to Volvo.”Chicago Sun-Times

“The Volvo S60 rides well and handles well. It feels stable at high speeds. The all-wheel-drive model provides excellent driver control on slippery surfaces.”The New York Times
