2008 Volkswagen GTI Review

2008 Volkswagen GTI Review The GTI is a sporty variant of the Rabbit. Produced only sporadically since the '70s, it's a favorite of enthusiasts the world over. A limited 20th anniversary edition was made for 2003, and the current generation debuted in 2006. Automobile Magazine named it the "2007 Automobile of the Year."

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Volkswagen GTI is a sporty classic, and the current generation upholds that reputation. Practical, yet fun, the GTI is the rare car that combines the best of both worlds. This is, without a doubt, one of Volkswagen's best.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The four-door model earned 4 stars in government frontal crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. It earned "Good" IIHS scores for the front and side, but "Marginal" for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, stability and traction control, and full side airbags are standard. Rear side airbags are optional on four-door models.

The Mazda MAZDA6 has a larger engine and a bigger trunk, but gets slightly worse gas mileage.

What Others Are Saying:

"VW's original "hot hatchback" is a new, fifth-generation model with a larger-displacement and more-powerful turbo 4 cylinder, more modern platform and updated styling. If only VW could improve vehicle reliability ...." - MSN

"The new GTI is the most refined GTI and offers an excellent blend of performance and practicality. Too bad it's not more stylish." - Chicago Sun-Times

"Fortunately for those who cannot afford the luxury of a play car, there are some choices that combine the twin goals of business and pleasure. The most enjoyable one I have driven in some time is the 2007 Volkswagen GTI." - The Family Car
