2008 Toyota 4Runner Review

2008 Toyota 4Runner Review The 4Runner is a midsize SUV that debuted in 1985. Originally little more than a pickup truck with a bed shell, it's since evolved into a nigh-luxurious SUV with potent off-road strength. The fourth and most recent incarnation debuted in 2003. Back in 2005, it was ranked by J.D. Power as the highest ranked SUV in "Initial Quality"

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Toyota 4Runner has came a long way, but still sticks to its roots as a rugged utility vehicle. While it may need a few extra options to give it a boost on the trail, it's as versatile as ever. Comfortable and reliable, the 4Runner is still a top choice in its class.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the 4Runner 5 stars for dependability. Problems with the third generation included oil leaks and excessive oil consumption. It was recalled four times. The current generation had early issues with brake noise, odors, bent rear wipers, troublesome moonroofs, and suspension noise. No recalls have been issued. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The 4Runner earned 4 stars in government frontal crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. In IIHS tests, it earned "Good" for the front and side, and "Poor" for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, side airbags for the first two rows and stability control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Powerful
+ Reliable
+ Off-road capable

Cons
- Side airbags don't cover third row
- Disappointing crash test scores
- Has traded in some off-road acumen for roadside manners

Head-To-Head Competition:

The GMC Envoy has 50 more hp, but costs several thousand more and has less towing capacity. For about the same price, the Saturn Outlook XE comes with a third row standard, plus has about 30 more hp and can tow a bit more. The Nissan Murano has a CD changer and 30 more hp, but can't tow as much.

What Others Are Saying:

"As an off-road machine, the current 4Runner is severely compromised. Toyota baked all of its mud-plugging goodness into the FJ Cruiser and relegated the 4Runner to highway and light trail duty. In other words, the 4Runner is now a refined, rugged looking, long-legged station wagon that gets miserable gas mileage. It's a terrific machine, but what's the point?" - The Truth About Cars

"Toyota has dressed up the 4Runner to look like a ruffian, with a full kilt of tough-looking body cladding. And to be sure, when equipped with four-wheel drive, the 4Runner's high ground clearance and underbody protection give it real-truck off-road capabilities. But the lumberjack looks conceal a gentle heart." - U.S.News & World Report

"The Toyota 4Runner is a highly capable trail vehicle. It will get you over the rocks and through the muck, but it won't make you regret its durable construction when you're cruising the Interstate. It's smooth and quiet on the road and there's plenty of room for family and friends." - The New York Times
