Shopping For A Roadside Assistance Plan: What To Look For

Car trouble in the middle of nowhere? No problem … if you have a roadside assistance plan. Out of all the car-related expenses and optional add-ons, a roadside assistance plan may be the wisest investment you can make: it’s inexpensive, will more than likely pay for itself if you use it once or twice, it saves you time, money and, most importantly, headaches. There are many options in the market with prices ranging from $10 to $80 a year. There are also different levels of coverage, but you should definitely request at least the following services:

  • Towing – Some roadside assistance plans place a maximum on the distance you can tow your car or the number of times you can use the service. If you go out of town frequently, look for a service that covers larger distances.
  • Locksmith – It happens to the best of us! Make sure you’re covered even if your car has an electronic key.
  • Gasoline – Run out of gas and don’t know where the nearest gas station is? No worries, someone should bring it to you.
  • Minor Repairs – If a hose breaks, your car will quit running. Your best friend, the roadside assistance guy, can do this simple repair on the spot.
  • Assistance with flat tires.
  • Jump-starts – Batteries die, it’s part of life. A jump-start can get you back on the road quickly.
  • Winching – Stuck in the mud, sand or snow? Roadside assistance plans should get you out of a sticky situation.
  • 24-hour service 365 days a year.

Auto clubs are the most popular providers of roadside assistance plans. AAA alone has more than 49 million members. However, you can also buy it as part of your insurance plan. If you’re purchasing a new car, the dealership or manufacturer may offer complimentary roadside assistance, but keep in mind that it will expire with your new car warranty.
