2008 Nissan Frontier Review
The Frontier is a compact pickup that was introduced in 1998. Nissan was the first company to introduce a compact pickup to the U.S. in 1959. A crew cab model debuted for 2000, a first for the compact truck segment. It was restyled in 2001, and the second generation debuted in 2005.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Nissan Frontier is a compact, now more midsize, pickup suitable for any occasion. It's a very comfortable ride during everyday activities, but rugged enough that all trims can handle off-road duties. However, in terms of raw power, features and a higher-grade interior, you might find a better deal elsewhere. But overall, the Frontier is a versatile and competent truck that deserves a look.

What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power gives the Frontier 3 stars for overall dependability. The last generation had issues with engine noise. It was recalled 8 times for issues including failing fuel pumps, fuel leakage, loose transmission pins and loose taillight bulbs. The current second generation has had one recall and some electrical issues, engine rattling and stuck seating. Expect average to above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The extended cab earned 4.5 stars in government frontal crash tests and 5 stars for the front side. The regular cab earned 4 stars for the front and 5 for the side. In IIHS tests, the Frontier received "Good" for the front and "Poor" for the rear. Anti-lock brakes come standard. Full side airbags are optional. The Traction Package is available on the LE and NISMO, which adds stability control, and hill assistance.

The Ford Ranger has a bigger engine and more towing capacity, as well as a CD player and air conditioning. The Dodge Dakota has a V6 engine with almost 60 more hp, more towing capacity, air conditioning and a CD player, but costs several thousand more and lacks power accessories.
What Others Are Saying:
"The new Frontier has a nice blend of civility and toughness and is among the most competitive pickup trucks." - Chicago Sun-Times
"Family hauler, work truck, off-road adventure machine or Santa's sleigh, the Frontier is a good value -- if you can tolerate the fuel bills." - The Dallas Morning News
"The cabin is durable and functional, as it should be, with tough polyester upholstery that seems like it would stand up to lots of dirt and abuse. And the old, square toolbox design has been replaced by a truck that looks chiseled and muscular. You'd never guess that it's practical too." - U.S. News & World Report
