New 2007 Sports Cars ... And Did We Mention They Are Electric?
Picture this: You're driving down the highway in your awesome, Ferrari-like, new 2007 sports car, with the wind in your hair, feeling that unique sense of freedom and empowerment. You hit the accelerator and make 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, reaching the top speed of 130 mph. All heads turn and look at you with envy as you fly by. And then you think ... why didn't they make electric cars like this before?
Yes, electric cars. Lack of power is no longer a valid excuse for manufacturers not making electric cars.
The revolutionary electric car is manufactured by Tesla Motors, a Silicon Valley-based company founded in 2003. Their mission statement: making "high-performance, highly efficient electric sports cars - with no compromises." The Tesla Roadster, the company's first product, certainly meets these standards.
According to the manufacturer, this electric car is six times as efficient as the most popular sports car, but produces only one tenth of the pollution. Its lithium-ion batteries can be charged in 3.5 hours using an at-home unit or mobile charging kit. A full charge can take you on a 250-mile ride without a problem, reducing the per mile cost to 1 cent.
Just like anything coming from Silicon Valley, the car is loaded with the latest technology, including satellite navigation system, iPod dock, a Vehicle Display System and a Homelink device.
The downside? The Tesla Roadster is certainly not a car for the masses. The price tag on this baby is close to $100,000, which is not too bad if you compare it to the new car price quote of other upscale sports cars like the Ferrari 612 - priced around $250,000 - or the Porsche 911 - with a price range reaching $131,000. If this is within your budget, the Tesla electric car will be available in the summer of 2007, and the company is already taking orders on the first 100.
The rest of us will have to wait a couple of years to drive a Tesla. The company's goal is to create a four-door sedan priced below $50,000 by 2008.
