What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Outlander 4 stars for mechanical quality, and 3 stars for performance and design. The first generation had issues with sticky temperature dials, overheating engines and vibration. Only one major recall was issued for an overheating electronic control module. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Outlander earned perfect government crash test scores. In IIHS tests, it received “Good” scores for the front and rear. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, active head restraints and stability control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Stylish
+ Sporty handling
+ Fantastic warranty

Cons
- Some cheap materials
- Disappointing 3rd row seat
- Package options

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Ford Escape and the Honda Element are both very comparable in price, features and performance. You might also consider the Jeep Liberty, which has a larger engine with 40 more hp. However, it doesn’t come with an automatic transmission.

What Others Are Saying:

“Its dash of panache, impressive standard features, trick tailgate and under 25 large asking price make the Outlander an attractive value proposition. That is, after you buy into the need for a tall station wagon.”The Truth About Cars

“I’d consider purchasing an Outlander. It’s comfortable, has an exceptionally easy to load boot, gives low 20s fuel economy around town, and high 20′s on the highway. It even has fun to drive character. Compared to Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Dodge Nitro, it has a competitive price and outclasses some of their standard items, regardless of its trim level.”The Auto Channel

“To distinguish itself in this crowded market segment, Mitsubishi can’t play catch-up. The Outlander needs Evo-style passion. Then we’ll really have something to dream about.”Automobile Magazine
