2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Review

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Review The Lancer is a compact car that first debuted in 1973. Originally sold under a number of Chrysler nameplates in the United States, the Lancer quickly gained a reputation for its racing performance. In 2003, the performance-centered Lancer Evolution debuted. A special Ralliart edition was produced for 2004.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is more refined than ever. That might disappoint some of its die-hard fans, but there are many that will appreciate its new-found smooth ride and easy handling. It's still one of the best bargains in performance, and it's sure to turn heads.

What's New For 2008:

The Evolution is all-new for 2008. It features a turbocharged 2.0-L, 291-hp four-cylinder engine, mated with either a 5-speed (GSR trim) or 6-speed (MR trim) transmission. The MR's transmission is capable of automatic clutching.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power information is not available. Problems with the last generation include rattling and water leaks. It had one major recall in 2005 for an improperly made coolant hose that allowed leaks. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Lancer earned an average of 4.5 stars in government crash tests. During tests, the side rear door flung open. Although on later models, the side door latch was adjusted. The IIHS gave the Lancer "Good" scores for frontal and rear impacts. Anti-lock brakes, a full array of air bags and stability control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Great performance for the money
+ Automatic clutch
+ More refined handling than before

Cons
- Mediocre interior
- Lacks traction control
- Not as powerful as its predecessors

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Acura TL costs about $5,000 more and lacks AWD, but includes traction control, leather, navigation and a moonroof. The Subaru Impreza WRX STI cost about $1,000, but has a CD changer, leather and more cargo room. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class 350 has traction control, but costs about $4,000 more, lacks AWD, and has over 20 less hp.

What Others Are Saying:

"With the all-wheel drive and a tightly snubbed though compliant suspension system, the Evo can be flogged mercilessly around a race track, following tight lines in the corners. Though it handles precisely, it also is forgiving enough that even novice drivers should not get into trouble unless they overextend themselves." - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"Now, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is not only technically improved, it offers distinctive styling and an added element of driving fun." - Contra Costa Times

"In the end, some of our fears were correct: Yes, the new Evo is slightly more diluted than its forebears, and yes, it's not quite as dramatic and frenzied as we had hoped. But to bemoan the march of progress is to miss the bigger picture. We might mourn the loss of the Evo IX's rough-around-the-edges personality, and we might complain that the latest Evolution MR isn't available with a manual transmission, but in the end, you have to be realistic." - Automobile Magazine
