2008 Mazda Mazda6 Review

2008 Mazda Mazda6 Review The Mazda6 is a midsize sedan that debuted in 2003. It replaced the long lasting 626 and Millenia. At its debut, it provided a sporty ride and more distinctive styling than many class-leading sedans. A new version of the Mazda6 is expected for the 2009 model year. It was featured in Car and Driver's "Ten Best" list in 2003.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Mazda Mazda6 brought a lot of much-needed zest to its segment when it was first introduced. Now though, its competitors have either caught up with it or surpassed it, particularly in terms of better power and fuel-efficiency. But, it's still a great pick for those wanting a practical car with a sporty feel.

What's New For 2008:

The wagon version has been dropped. The Touring and Grand Touring are now only available with a six-speed automatic transmission. A tire pressure monitor now standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Spirited performance
+ Available hatchback
+ Tight handling

Cons
- No more wagon
- Lack of stability control
- Less power than some competitors

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chevrolet Cobalt is very similar to the base model, in both features and cost. The Nissan Altima starts at a few hundred less, has about 20 more hp and gets about 3 more mpg. The Pontiac G6 is similar and has an automatic transmission standard, but costs a few hundred more.

What Others Are Saying:

"On the outside, some of the appeal comes from relatively cheap makeup: molding and cladding that produce a muscular look but add nothing to performance. But the 6's heart is authentic. On one curling section of highway I found myself sandwiched between a bus on my right and a semitrailer on my left. On a straightaway it would have been easy to blast ahead of them, but the tight curve added a dimension that in many vehicles probably would have led me to simply fall back. The 6's firm hold of the road gave me the confidence, however, to hammer the accelerator into the turn. The bus and the truck disappeared." - U.S. News & World Report

"Now that you have a family and responsibilities, and that Mustang that you loved so much just won't cut it any more, this new batch from Mazda should keep you smiling while you are being the picture of responsibility." - The Family Car

"When you add up all of these wonderful characteristics, the Mazda6 equals a perfect 10. As we watched the 6 leave our office, we ran some other numbers through our heads - MSRPs, optional packages, fuel economy figures and performance numbers... And then we raced to our desks to find one final set of numbers - the digits to our local Mazda dealership. Simply put, the Mazda6 is a must have." - Roadfly
