2008 Kia Sportage Review

2008 Kia Sportage Review The Sportage debuted in 1995 as a compact SUV. After a two year hiatus, it returned in 2005 as a compact CUV. Most have welcomed its newfound comforts, as the first model was widely criticized for its cramped interior and lack of get-up-and-go.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

While the Kia Sportage isn’t the small, rugged SUV it used to be, it’s a competent, well-priced crossover. It’s not quite as refined as Japanese models; however, it costs quite a bit less. The Sportage is a great choice for anyone on a limited budget who doesn’t want to sacrifice quality.

What’s New For 2008:

The Sportage is unchanged for 2008. Two trims are available: LX and EX.

The current model has had issues with flaky transmission computers and fog lights. It was recalled three times in the first year for fuel tank leaks, defective parking brake levers, and improperly configured antiskid systems. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Sportage received perfect government crash test scores. In IIHS tests, it received “Acceptable” for the front and side, and “Poor” for the rear. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Comfortable
+ Excellent warranty
+ Lots of standard features

Cons
- Weak engine
- Could get better gas mileage
- Handling not as tight as competitors

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chrysler PT Cruiser costs a few hundred less, but lacks anti-lock brakes and traction control. The Honda Element includes air conditioning and has nearly 30 more hp, but costs a few thousand more and gets five fewer miles to the gallon. The Hyundai Tucson is virtually identical, but costs over a thousand more.

What Others Are Saying:

“Thanks to its modest size, the Sportage is also easy to maneuver in traffic or in a crowded parking structure at the shopping mall. The steering is light, but responsive, and outward visibility is good in all directions. Which is to say, it doesn’t feel as if you’re behind the wheel of some ungainly truck.”The Dallas Morning News

“The new Sportage is a big improvement over the old model, and shows how far South Korean automakers can come in a relatively short time.”Chicago Sun-Times

“And, it is evident from Sportage, they tune their handling differently. The Kia is sportier, more fun to drive. And it stands as evidence that the day the seers saw is almost here….Still some flaws, but strikingly appealing nonetheless.”USA Today
