2008 Jeep Wrangler Review

2008 Jeep Wrangler Review The Wrangler is a compact convertible SUV that traces its lineage all the way back to World War II. The original Jeep evolved into the Jeep CJ, which was replaced by the YJ in 1987. The TJ debuted in 1997, with a return to its classic round headlights. The most recent generation, the JK, debuted in 2007, and with it a four-door version.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Jeep Wrangler is a unique American icon. It's the original SUV, and in its price range, nothing yet can keep up with it off the road. It's not the most safe, practical or plush vehicle, but for off-road enthusiasts, there's just no substitute.

What's New For 2008:

Tire pressure monitoring is now standard across the line. And a standard Sunrider soft top was added on the Sahara and the Rubicon. The Sahara Appearance package is now available, with extra cosmetic trim. Also, a remote starter is now available.

J.D. Power gives the Wrangler 3 stars for dependability. Problems with the last generation included inaccurate fuel gauges, stiff shifters, water leaks, stuck door locks and fuel odors. It was recalled 13 times for issues including numerous airbag problems and possible fires. Expect average to below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Wrangler earned 5 stars in government frontal crash tests. No other data is available. Anti-lock brakes, a rollover sensor, and stability control are standard. Side airbags are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Can go nearly anywhere
+ Highly customizable
+ A rugged convertible

Cons

- High recall history

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Mitsubishi Outlander LS 4WD has side airbags, air conditioning, can tow more, and gets better mileage on the highway, but costs about $5,000 more. The Toyota FJ Cruiser costs about $3,000 more, but has AC and power accessories standard, and can tow about 5 times as much. The Ford Escape XLT 4WD has side airbags, an automatic, and AC, but costs about $5,000 thousand more.

What Others Are Saying:

"Understanding that primary purpose is the key to happiness. Unlike many vehicles that handle a wide variety of tasks with overall competence, the Wrangler remains a specialist aimed at backwoods trails. Its on-pavement performance, while improved, could easily become aggravating without a consolation prize - like finding yourself in places where no cars have gone before." - The New York Times

"I don't understand why anyone would choose to put themselves through the misery of transporting children in this car if they did not absolutely have to. I understand that this isn't the main purpose of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, but even die-hard off-roaders use their vehicles like the rest of us occasionally." - Mother Proof

"The Wrangler two-door is comfortable during laid-back open-cockpit cruising on balmy days or during rugged off-road treks, while still being practical for daily driving in all kinds of weather. It's remained true to its heritage, which is a definite plus when all-new vehicles seem to be introduced every other day." - Chicago Sun-Times
