Manufacturer’s Environmental Image is Important to Buyers

April 25, 2008

A new survey from automotive consumer advice and price quote web site BuyingAdvice.com, shows that the majority of new car buyers pay attention to the environmental stance of car manufacturers when they are researching a new car to purchase.

Sixty percent of the poll sampled said that they felt that the “green-consciousness” of the manufacturer they were considering was an important part of their vehicle buying decision.

When those surveyed were asked to name the most environmentally conscious manufacturer, Honda topped the list in a very close tie with Toyota. Both brands were selected by over 35 percent of the sample, 35.8 and 35.2 respectively. GM lead the domestic brands with about 14 percent of the response, while Ford and Nissan trailed behind.

The sample was also asked if Toyota’s decision to side with the three Detroit-based manufacturer’s and oppose the federal proposal to increase average gasoline mileage by the year 2020 had impacted their view of the manufacturer. Sixty four percent said that it had not changed their view of Toyota while 35 percent said that it had. Only 44 percent of respondents said that they were even aware of the stance taken by the Detroit 3 and Toyota.

All participants in the poll were drawn from among the over 50,000 new car buyers who request competitive online price quotes from BuyingAdvice.com each month.

This survey was the latest in a series being conducted by BuyingAdvice.com in an effort to provide one of the most comprehensive pictures of buyer opinion today.
