2008 GMC Yukon XL Review

YUKON Since its debut in 1992, the GMC Yukon XL has made a name for itself as the SUV for large families and those in need of generous seating and cargo space. Most vehicles cannot match its 9-passenger seating or its impressive towing capacity. And for the power-hungry, the Yukon XL offers the option of four different V-8’s.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The GMC Yukon XL is the Yukon, only better. It delivers a quiet, comfortable ride with a spacious interior and substantial power.

What’s New For 2008:

Side curtain airbags are now standard. The SLT and Denali now include navigation standard. The XL is available as a 1500 or 2500, and comes in one standard SLE trim, with an optional SLT package.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Yukon 5 stars for dependability. Problems with the last generation included failed blower motors, faulty manual transmissions, suspension noise, and rough idling. It was recalled 14 times. Expect below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The XL received perfect government crash test scores. IIHS results are not available. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, a rollover sensor, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Spacious seating
+ Comfortable
+ Quiet, smooth ride

Cons
- Overwhelmed engine
- Cumbersome third row
- Vague steering

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chevrolet Suburban includes a third row and navigation, but lacks traction control. The Ford Expedition Limited includes leather, a CD changer, and has greater towing capacity. The Nissan Armada costs a few thousand less, includes a third row, and a CD changer.

What Others Are Saying:

“The Yukon XL is an excellent choice for drivers who need the towing capability or the heavy duty chassis and rugged suspension of a full-size truck. Those who don’t need true truck capability might want to look at the GMC Acadia.”The New York Times

“Upon returning the Yukon XL, I delighted in the memory of a wonderfully luxurious road trip. This vehicle puts a whole new spin on comfort and travel. As hard as it is to scale back from first class to economy, though, I do look forward to lower-maintenance parking and better maneuverability. “Mother Proof

“Next to the Cadillac Escalade, the Denalis are about as plush as sport-utility vehicles get. Yet, I couldn’t help but wonder if their stats may not be fading. With the recent emergence of excellent crossover vehicles, including those built by General Motors, the Denali simply is not as sensible a purchase for family needs as, say, the less expensive, equally roomy and equally opulent GMC Acadia.”The Family Car
