2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Review

2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Review The Ram is a full-size pickup truck that debuted in 1994. A quad cab debuted in 1998, and the second generation followed in 2002. A Mega Cab version was released in 2006 and was the biggest cab ever offered. That year, it was voted "4x4 of the Year" by 4wheel and Off-Road, and "Pickup Truck of the Year" by Four Wheeler.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

There's no doubt the Dodge Ram 1500 makes an impression. With its bold looks, towering size, and available V10 engine, it stands out as the wild child of domestic pickups. But competitors offer more features for the money, as well as far better reliability. Sadly, the Ram is a case of style over substance.

What's New For 2008:

The engine has been upgraded to a 4.7-L V8 capable of 310 horsepower that also boosts fuel economy. A tire pressure monitor is now available. The optional stability control system now features Trailer Sway Control.

J.D. Power gives the Ram 2 stars for overall quality. Problems with the Ram from 2002 to 2005 included rough idling, steering noise, water leaks, dents, flaky locks and failing air conditioners. It was recalled 8 times. Problems with the Ram since 2006 include shuddering, steering pull, failing radios and failing climate control. It's been recalled 7 times for brake issues, insufficient lubrication, excessive airbag force, wheel lockup and other issues. Expect below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Ram earned 5 stars in government crash tests for front impacts. In IIHS tests, it scored a "Good" for the front, and "Poor" for the rear. Rear anti-lock brakes are standard. The SXT and Laramie feature full ABS. The Laramie includes adjustable pedals and stability control, but are optional on all other trims. Side airbags are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Aggressive and stylish
+ Satisfying ride
+ Incredibly roomy Mega Cab option

Cons
- Poor reliability
- Lower-grade interior
- Not as powerful base engine

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Ford F-150 includes power accessories and can tow more. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab has an automatic, power accessories and can tow more, but costs over a thousand more. The Toyota Tundra includes side airbags, traction control, an automatic transmission, can tow more and has 20 more hp, but costs about a thousand more.

What Others Are Saying:

"The Mega Cab is immense. Don't even think about using it as the family hauler. You'll have an impossible time at the Wal-Mart. If you manage to get it into a normal-size parking slot, you'll never get it out. However, it makes an ideal mobile office. It's capable enough to handle most roads and non-roads yet comfortable enough to transport the family after work." - About.com

"If I cared about my spinal cord, I'd get an F-150. If I wanted my truck to last 362,000 miles, I'd get a Silverado. If I wanted to haul ass in a rolling pantomime of bling and bravado (and occasionally tow a boat), there's no question I'd get a Ram. In short, the Dodge Ram is the Cadillac Escalade of pick-ups. Word." - The Truth About Cars

"The Dodge Ram offers big power and big capabilities. It's responsive and comfortable as an everyday driver and it's ready to do some serious work when called upon. Ram's distinctive styling makes it stand out in a rapidly improving field. Ram Quad Cab models offer a brilliant combination of comfort and utility. Even Regular Cabs are generously roomy and are thoughtfully set up to accommodate gear behind the seat." - The New York Times
