The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid is a breakthrough for GM. While it might not be the ideal first candidate for their new hybrid system, it shows immense promise. However, the cost of the vehicle is questionable in comparison to similar hybrids.

What’s New For 2008:

The Tahoe Hybrid is all-new. It’s GM’s first full hybrid. It’s capable of driving 30 miles on pure electricity.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Tahoe 3 stars for overall quality. The previous generation had issues with weak heaters, oil leaks, rough idling, and water leaks. It was recalled fifteen times. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles and drivers can expect below average reliability.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Tahoe Hybrid earned 5 stars in government crash tests. IIHS results are not available. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, a rearview camera, and traction control are standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Improved gas mileage
+ Comfortable
+ Spacious seating

Cons
- Expensive
- Difficult third-row removal
- Lacking stability control

Head-To-Head Competition:

The GMC Yukon Hybrid costs the same, and is virtually identical. The Jeep Commander costs several thousand less, includes 4WD, a CD changer, and a moonroof, but it lacks a third row and gets up to 8 fewer miles to the gallon. The Ford Expedition King Ranch costs several thousand less and includes 4WD and a CD changer, but lacks a third row and has 30 less hp.

What Others Are Saying:

“If the preproduction tester is a true harbinger, and if hybrid prices aren’t absurdly high, then GM is doing a great favor to buyers who need the beef and brawn of a truck-style SUV but have been scared off by poor mileage and high fuel prices.”USA Today

“Folks either have to start calling Tahoe fuel efficient or Camry a gas guzzler.”The Chicago Tribune

“For now, we have this paradox, a fuel-efficient vehicle that’s still a gas hog. A hybrid that’s simultaneously good (promise) and bad (reality). Matters could only get more muddled if a hybrid Hummer comes rolling out.”The Seattle Times
