2007 Toyota 4Runner Review

2007 Toyota 4Runner Review The 4Runner is a midsize SUV that was first introduced in 1984. Debuting as little more than a pickup truck with a shell over the bed, the 4Runner has evolved significantly. But one thing that hasn’t changed is its rugged off-road capability. While other SUVs have shifted into a more road-friendly role, the 4Runner has stayed true to its roots. J.D. Power voted it the “Highest Ranked Midsize SUV in Initial Quality” in 2005.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

It’s hard to argue with the Toyota 4Runner. Mature, reliable, and capable, the 4Runner is the standard by which all other midsize SUVs should be judged. If you mostly stick to the road, but desire an occasional roll in the mud, then the 4Runner fits the bill.

What’s New For 2007:

No changes are in store for 2007. The base SR5 includes climate control and power locks and windows. The Sport adds larger wheels, power seats, and a telescoping wheel. The Limited throws in a power outlet and heated leather seats.

The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The 4Runner earned 4 stars in frontal government crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. It earned “Good” ratings from the IIHS for frontal tests and “Poor” in rear tests. Anti-lock brakes and stability and traction control come standard. The 4WD models include hill assist. Side airbags are optional.

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chevrolet Trailblazer LS2 at $700 more offers standard 4WD and 50 more hp, but lacks traction control. The Dodge Nitro R/T includes standard 4WD, side airbags and 20 more hp, but has less payload capacity. The Honda Pilot is extremely similar, but adds side airbags and a CD changer.

What Others Are Saying:

“The bottom line is the 4Runner is simply a great machine. For the money, nothing currently available is more all-round capable.”About.com

“The perfect combination of ruggedness, refinement, and quality.”Automobile Magazine

“As an off-road machine, the current 4Runner is severely compromised. Toyota baked all of its mud-plugging goodness into the FJ Cruiser and relegated the 4Runner to highway and light trail duty. In other words, the 4Runner is now a refined, rugged looking, long-legged station wagon that gets miserable gas mileage. It’s a terrific machine, but what’s the point?”The Truth About Cars
