2007 Toyota 4Runner Review
The 4Runner is a midsize SUV that was first introduced in 1984. Debuting as little more than a pickup truck with a shell over the bed, the 4Runner has evolved significantly. But one thing that hasn’t changed is its rugged off-road capability. While other SUVs have shifted into a more road-friendly role, the 4Runner has stayed true to its roots. J.D. Power voted it the “Highest Ranked Midsize SUV in Initial Quality” in 2005.

It’s hard to argue with the Toyota 4Runner. Mature, reliable, and capable, the 4Runner is the standard by which all other midsize SUVs should be judged. If you mostly stick to the road, but desire an occasional roll in the mud, then the 4Runner fits the bill.

J.D Power gives the 4Runner 4.5 stars for mechanical quality, 4 stars for design quality, and 3.5 stars for performance and design. Problems with the last generation include oil consumption and leaks. It was recalled four times. The current generation has had issues with brake noise, smelly exhaust, rattling moon roofs, and suspension noise. No recalls have been issued. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The 4Runner earned 4 stars in frontal government crash tests and 5 stars in side tests. It earned “Good” ratings from the IIHS for frontal tests and “Poor” in rear tests. Anti-lock brakes and stability and traction control come standard. The 4WD models include hill assist. Side airbags are optional.

Head-To-Head Competition:
The Chevrolet Trailblazer LS2 at $700 more offers standard 4WD and 50 more hp, but lacks traction control. The Dodge Nitro R/T includes standard 4WD, side airbags and 20 more hp, but has less payload capacity. The Honda Pilot is extremely similar, but adds side airbags and a CD changer.
