2007 Nissan Sentra Review

2007 Nissan Sentra The Nissan Sentra has been a mainstay in the American economy car market since its debut in 1982. The fourth generation, which was produced from 1995 until 1999, was a step backwards for the Sentra. Costs were cut on interior materials, and it lost its independent rear suspension. However, the fifth generation, which ran from 2000 until 2006, was a return to form, with upgraded interior components, performance, and styling. A sporty, 165 horsepower SE-R was introduced in 2002. In 2004, Nissan removed the Sentra’s front stabilizer bar from the 1.8L version. The Nissan Sentra is all new for 2007.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The 2007 Nissan Sentra, delivers on performance, safety and extra interior space. However, the history of the previous generation raises doubts over reliability. We suggest being wary of most complete redesigns, as even the best engineers can’t anticipate every problem thrown up in daily driving. Our advice is to wait until Nissan and a few thousand other buyers have worked the bugs out. Let enough time pass for reliability data to be compiled before deciding the new Sentra is your next car.

What’s New For 2007:

The Sentra has been redesigned for 2007. The most noticeable change is its increase in size. Its larger wheelbase allows for more interior space, which features a rear split folding seat for even more space. The Sentra comes in three trims: Base, S, and SL.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

Since its a new model, long term reliability is not known for the 2007 Sentra. However, the Sentra’s reliability history is not favorable. J.D. Power and Associates gives the Sentra two and a half out of five stars in initial reliability. The previous Sentra generation had few reported issues, but numerous recalls. Reported issues with the last Sentra are mostly related to its debut model, and include: Malfunctioning air conditioning, crackling audio systems, steering noise, and water leaks. The 2000 and 2001 Sentra was recalled for separating wheels; 2001 models were recalled for fracturing bolts; the 2002 2.5L model was recalled due to potential fires; the 2003 model was recalled due to potential engine failure; the 2005 Sentra was recalled due to fuel spillage; and the 2.5L 2006 Sentra was recalled for excessive fuel usage. Expect below average reliability. The Sentra comes with a three year, 36,000 mile warranty.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Sentra fares better in the safety department than it does in reliability. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it five out of five stars in frontal crash tests, and four and a half out of five stars in side impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does not have data for the 2007 Sentra, but the 2006 model received an “Acceptable” score in front impact tests and “Poor” in side and rear impacts. The Sentra comes with a solid set of safety features, including full and front seat side airbags, and a tire pressure monitor. Anti-lock brakes are optional on all trims, and standard on the the SL.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Solid safety scores
+ Standard side airbags
+ Excellent fit and finish

Cons
- Poor reliability history
- No stability or traction control
- Noisy engine

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Sentra triumphs over domestic competitors, but is no match for imports. The Sentra costs about $700 less than the Chevrolet Cobalt LT2 and comes with side airbags. However, the Cobalt comes with an antilock brake system (ABS). The Sentra costs about as much as the Ford Focus, but the Focus lacks side airbags and a six speed manual. However, the Honda Fit easily beats the Sentra in practicality, with standard ABS, automatic transmission, more cargo capacity, and better gas mileage. The Sentra does have a few horsepower over the Fit.

What Others Are Saying:

“I liked the solidity of the Sentra, and it’s something you notice in the first mile you drive it. This is a car that’s well put-together and wants you to know it.”The Family Car

” The just-introduced sixth-generation Nissan Sentra has grown up. It’s larger, especially inside, very well-equipped, yet still reasonably priced and offers a more upscale experience than expected from a compact sedan.”The Auto Channel

“You may not feel compelled to live in it for a week as seen on TV, but the 2007 Sentra 2.0 SL is a solid value and makes good use of technology for efficiency, utility, and entertainment.”C|Net
