2008 Mazda MAZDA5 Review

2008 Mazda MAZDA5 Review The MAZDA5 is a minivan that debuted in 2006. It’s much sleeker than most minivans, and its compact shape makes for improved handling. It shares many parts with the MAZDA3, meaning that it has a bit of fun and tight handling to offer. It was named the “Best New Multipurpose Family Vehicle” in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year awards.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Mazda MAZDA5 is a new breed of minivan. In fact, it’s probably better to think of it like a wagon with extended cargo space. It has the sleek styling of the latest hip wagons, and its compact exterior makes it a breeze in crowded parking lots. And last but not least, its low price makes it a great alternative for people who need to haul a lot of stuff around.

What’s New For 2008:

The exterior has been refreshed, and a new control panel has been installed. Inside are new armrests, gauges, and an audio input jack. The Touring and Grand Touring now feature LED taillights.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the MAZDA5 3 stars for dependability. Problems include stuck key reminder chimes, vibrations and squeaky sunroofs. It’s been recalled three times for exhaust heat buildup and frozen doors. Expect above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are not available. Anti-lock brakes and full side airbags are standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Sporty feel
+ Compact size
+ Economical

Cons
- Limited safety features
- Not as nimble as a wagon
- Passenger space smaller than many

Head-To-Head Competition:

The MAZDA5 has more in common with wagons than it does with most minivans. The Scion xB has a bit more passenger space, and costs less, but has half as much cargo space. The Honda Fit has half the cargo space, but has more legroom, can make tighter turns, and costs quite a bit less. The Kia Spectra5 has under half as much cargo space, but has more legroom, and a longer warranty.

What Others Are Saying:

“The Mazda5 is the type of vehicle that’s popular in Japan and Europe, where space and utility must be maximized and driving performance and economy are important. The Mazda5 should do well in America because vehicles with those attributes are becoming more popular here, especially with $3-per-gallon gasoline prices.”Chicago Sun-Times

“Other drivers didn’t seem to notice the Mazda5 test vehicle, even though it was new to the market. I guess the compact size isn’t readily noticeable unless the vehicle is right next to a larger van, and the Mazda5 styling is pretty mainstream. But after driving the Mazda5, I think more carmakers should install manually sliding doors on their smaller vehicles. At grocery stores and in shopping malls, I didn’t have to worry about the Mazda5′s open doors blocking my way or striking vehicles parked too close.”MaineToday

“The driving experience is Mazda-sporty… The design team did a nice job of keeping the stiff, sporty ride of the Mazda3, tempering it enough for comfort while leaving the driver with responsive steering.”The Boston Globe
