2008 Dodge Dakota Review

2008 Dodge Dakota Review The Dakota is a compact truck that debuted in 1987. Larger than most of its contemporaries, it’s larger than say, a Ranger, but smaller than a Silverado. Also unlike others in its class, it’s typically available with a V8 engine. It received a re-design this year. It was nominated for “North American Truck of the Year” in 2000.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Dodge Dakota is a unique entry in the truck field, offering more space than most compacts, but without the bulk of a midsize truck. With its new interior, it offers enough comfort for any family. Unfortunately, it’s plagued by Chrysler’s typically poor reliability, making it a tough sell in a crowded market.

What’s New For 2008:

The Dakota has been refreshed for 2008. The interior and exterior have been redesigned. A new 4.7-L V8 is now available, producing 302 horsepower.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the Dakota 3 stars for overall quality. The previous generation had issues with rough idling, vehicle noise, water leaks, chipping paint, engine misfires, and stiff shifting. It was recalled 16 times. In the past three years, the model has had issues with difficult backing up, transmission leaks, failing remote starters and engine noise. It’s been recalled five times for improper airbag deployment, transmission issues, electrical damage, brake lockup and wheel lockup. Expect below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for three years or 36,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

The Dakota earned 5 stars in government crash tests. In IIHS tests, it earned “Acceptable” for the front and rear. Rear anti-lock brakes are standard. Full ABS and side airbags are optional.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Spacious
+ Tight handling
+ Powerful engines

Cons
– Reliability
– Limited safety options
– Expensive base model

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Chevrolet Colorado includes power accessories, a standard automatic and gets slightly better highway mileage. However, it has a smaller four-cylinder engine, 25 less hp and can’t carry as much. A similarly equipped Ford Ranger has power accessories and an automatic, but is hindered with a smaller engine with 60 less hp. The Nissan Frontier has power locks and windows plus 50 more hp for about the same price.

What Others Are Saying:

“The Dodge Dakota is on the large end of the mid-size pickups. Dakota is unique in its class, with its brawny style, generous size, powerful V8 engines for towing, and plenty of room for a typical family.”The New York Times

“What Dodge’s just-right-sized Durango is to the sport/utility-vehicle segment, the Dakota is to pickups, neatly bridging the size, performance, and capability gaps between compact and full-size trucks.” – Motor Trend

“Previous Dakotas have been ahead of the curve, always larger than their competitors. Not surprisingly, the new Dakota stays ahead of the game as well.”Truck Trend
