2007 BMW X3 Review
BMW released the X3 in the 2004 model year as a companion to their successful BMW X5, and to stave off competition from Lexus and Land Rover. Much of the X3 was taken from BMW 3 Series parts, and an intelligent all-wheel drive system called XDrive was added. Critics loathed it, however, for its mediocre interior materials and rough ride. BMW sought to fix these problems in 2005, with a vast interior upgrade, and a slightly softer suspension. The 2006 X3 saw few changes. The “M” body kit came standard, featuring painted exterior plastic, and the 2.5i engine was dropped.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The BMW X3‘s sleek exterior styling combined with a luxurious leather interior and multiple safety systems justify its relatively high price tag. High initial quality ratings combined with traditionally strong BMW handling make the X3 an attractive option in the luxury compact SUV market.
What’s New For 2007:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
The X3 received five out of five stars in initial quality from J.D. Power and Associates, and older models received five out of five reliability ratings from Automotive Information Systems. X3 owners have had few complaints, and overall, it has been a very reliable model since its 2004 debut. The initial batch did have a few issues, such as engine stalling, overheating, and moonroof issues, but those problems seem to have been ironed out in later models. Overall, expect above average reliability out of the X3. It comes with a four year, 50,000 mile basic warranty.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The 2007 X3 has not yet been crash tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. However, the X3 has some very impressive safety features. All safety systems have a backup, so if one goes out, the other can take its place. This extends to its airbags, which include dual two-stage bags in front, front and rear side curtain airbags, and front-seat side airbags. It also features an advanced stability control system that offers brake fade compensation, drying, and standby. Its all-wheel drive system, xDrive, calculates when the driver is losing control of the vehicle, and can individually apply power to each wheel in response.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Luxurious interior
+ Advanced safety features
+ xDrive
Cons
– Relatively small carrying capacity
– Unknown safety
– Expensive options
Head-To-Head Competition:
The BMW is a fairly expensive vehicle, but it compares well against its direct competitors in the luxury sector. If you want additional capacity, the Lexus RX 350 has about 100 more square feet of space for $800 more. It also comes standard with a CD changer, but lacks the X3’s moonroof. If you want luxury for less, the Acura RDX is $1,500 cheaper, and comes standard with a CD changer, navigation system, and leather seats. The X3, however, does have a larger engine, with about the same gas mileage.
What Others Are Saying:
“I was going downhill with a sharp turn to the left. My wheels hit sand as I was braking, and I felt the X3 was going to go straight (under steer) over the side. Then xDrive took over (I could physically feel the torque shift between the axles), and the X3 simply turned the corner as if it was on 3rd Avenue in New York. When we got back to the hotel, we thought about it and decided that xDrive was simply smarter than we were.” – Family Car
“Based on the new 3 Series architecture just hitting our shores, it deserves a year-long look. Typical of the BMW ordering system, many options are available a la carte: To the base price of $30,300, we managed to add another $13,950 in options, for a total of $44,945 including the $695 destination charge.” – Motor Trend
” We took delivery of the X3 and were given the opportunity to drive it in an environment where few X3s are likely to go: off-roading. And while the X3’s off-road performance isn’t on par with the likes of Land Rover, it is surprisingly competent. On more civilized surfaces, the X3 does BMW proud by delivering one heckuva driving experience.” – RoadFly
