22008 Audi S8 Review The A8 is a full-size luxury sedan that debuted in 1997. An extended wheelbase model arrived in 2000 and the second and current generation premiered in 2004. The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Audi S8 is a welcome combination of comfort and performance. If your sole concern is performance, there are other options to consider. The S8 however, remains one of the most luxurious models out there.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the A8 2 stars for overall dependability. Problems with the first generation included brake noise, faulty climate control, and flaky brakes. It was recalled three times. Issues with the current model include flaky brakes, engine noise, failing automatic suspensions, noisy steering, and weak air conditioners. It's been recalled twice for deactivated airbags. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles and drivers can expect below average reliability.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores aren't available. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, front knee airbags, and stability control come standard. Parking assist is now available.

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Cadillac STS-V costs far less and includes a moonroof, but only has a V8 and lacks AWD. The BMW M5 costs several thousand less, has 50 more hp, and a moonroof, but lacks AWD and a CD changer. The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class 63 AMG has nearly 60 more hp and a moonroof, but only has a V8 and lacks AWD.

What Others Are Saying:

"If one of the reasons you're looking to drop some $100,000 on your personal transportation is for the attention that often accompanies such a move, the S8 might be a little too visually understated for your liking" - Kelley Blue Book

"With the new S8, Audi has done a lot more to make its largest S model something special. But the overall effect is still fairly subtle compared with other German supersedans. If you're judging by the numbers, the S8 is not your car. But buyers who appreciate a well-rounded package more than bragging rights may find the S8's subtlety to be a virtue." - Automobile Magazine

"The S8 isn't the obvious choice in the high-zoot performance-sedan segment. The BMW M5 is faster and fiercer. The Mercedes E55 or S55 will more immediately impress the neighbors. The S8 is comparatively subtle. Only its low, lizard-like stance and shiny trim betray its impressive capabilities. It's fleet, secure, and quietly confident. It corners flat and true and stops with reassuring force. The S8's unusual mix of attitudes and attributes means it's not easy to define its character. Its light steering is from the luxury end of the spectrum. Its sense of urgency -- from its short gearing -- is decidedly performance car. It's a mix that I love." - Car and Driver
