2008 Audi S6 Review
The S6 is a high-performance variant of the Audi A6. It followed the A6′s debut in 1994, but was merely a restyled first-gen S4. The S6 sedan was taken off the U.S. market after 1995, but the S6 Avant wagon was made available for 2002 and 2003. The third-generation S6 reappeared for 2006.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Audi S6 stacks up well with its competitors and delivers stunning performance for not only a lower price, but with standard AWD. The S6 corners well, no matter the weather. With plenty of gadgets and top safety features, the S6 is a bargain among luxury supercars.
What’s New For 2008:
What is the Predicted Reliability:
Information isn’t available for the S6 variant, but J.D. Power gives the A6 4.5 stars for overall mechanical reliability, as well as performance and design. Problems with the last generation include failing cruise control, inaccurate fuel gauges, failing power seats, rough idling, blown window fuses, and leaking windshields. It was recalled 11 times. Problems with the current generation include stuck fuel doors, inaccurate fuel gauges, keys stuck in the ignition, and oil leaks. No recalls have been issued. Expect average to above average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
Crash test scores are not available, but the 2007 A6 earned perfect IIHS ratings and was chosen as one of their “Top Safety Picks.” Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, all-wheel drive, and stability control come standard. Rear side airbags, Lane Assist, and a backup camera are optional.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Good value for the money
+ Standard AWD
+ Excellent safety record
Cons
- No manual transmission
- Arguably inferior performance
- Rough ride
Head-To-Head Competition:
The BMW M5 has 65 more hp, but costs over $10,000 more, lacks AWD and a CD changer. The 2008 Cadillac STS-V has 30 more hp, but costs over $4,000 more, lacks AWD, and only has a V8. The Jaguar S-Type R costs about $8,000 less, but has less cargo capacity, lacks AWD, and only has a V8 with 35 less hp.
What Others Are Saying:
“Equipped with a potent V10, the new S6 competes with BMW’s M5, but skews toward luxury.” – Forbes
“We expected the S6 to be notably slower and less involving, with more androgynous handling qualities and less feedback overall. But we were wrong. Despite the near total absence of drama, its set of reflexes is complete.” – Automobile Magazine
“My one serious complaint about the S6 is the lack of a manual transmission. I know, I know — car writers generally prefer stick-shifts even though the buying public doesn’t. But there’s a level of driver involvement that only a clutch pedal can provide, and if ever a car were begging for that level of involvement, it’s the S6. Still for those who not only love to drive but also appreciate engineering as an art form, the Audi S6 has no rival…” – About.com
